Rip Hunter’s role on DC’s Legends of Tomorrow has been so in flux this past season, you’d need a Time Master to untangle it.
With Arthur Darvill taking time out from the show to film the final series of ITV’s Broadchurch, Rip vanished for a handful of episodes, only to later return with amnesia.
He was briefly transformed into a villain by the Legion of Doom, before returning to the side of good – only to apparently leave the Waverider and his Legends behind for good.
The good news is that Rip WILL return for the show’s upcoming third season – and Digital Spy was the first to grill Darvill on what’s next.
“I don’t know how much I can say – I’m definitely in it!” he laughed. “I know kind of what’s happening, but you’ll have to wait and see.
“It’s very exciting, what’s going to happen. I’m very happy with what we’ve come up with. They’re very good at keeping us involved in how our stories pan out, so I’m really excited to see where it goes in the future. I think there’ll be a few surprises in store for people!”
A synopsis released last month for the new season revealed that Rip would be heading up a new team called the Time Bureau, which may bring him into conflict with the Legends.
But with the character popping in and out last season – appearing in 11 of the 17 episodes – what we really wanted to know is… will Darvill be a series regular this year?
“Um… I don’t know how much I’m allowed to say. I’m definitely in it, and there’ll be some of it that I’m not in!
“Honestly, I don’t know [how many episodes I’m in] – I really don’t know yet. There’s a plan, but who knows whether the plan sticks. They’d kill me if I actually gave away what the plan is, and also, guaranteed, the plan’s gonna change!”
Clear as muck? Good.
What is clear is that Rip won’t appear in every episode this year, so expect the Legends’ former leader to be recurring – a la season two – rather than a return to his regular season one role.
DC’s Legends of Tomorrow returns to The CW in the US on Tuesday, October 10 at 9/8c. The series airs on Sky 1 in the UK.
Arthur Darvill stars in Taylor Mac’s Hir – opening at the Bush Theatre on Thursday (June 15) and running till July 22. Tickets are available at bushtheatre.co.uk.
