We like Brie Larson, we really do. It’s why we were excited when she was confirmed as Captain Marvel in the MCU.
However, and we can’t sugarcoat this, her new movie Basmati Blues – where she plays a brilliant rice scientist who also sings – looks absolutely dreadful and packed with every Indian stereotype you can think of.
Observe for yourself below.
Basmati Blues was originally set for release in 2015, so it’s not ‘new’ as such, but following Brie’s Oscar win and new-found Marvel fame, the movie is finally getting a fresh release, at least in India.
Only, there are likely to be a lot of people (rightly) outraged by it if the reactions to just the trailer are anything to go by.
Basmati Blues was co-written and directed by Dan Baron, whose only previous movie credit was as the writer of dodgy family comedy See Spot Run way back in 2001, so we’re not holding out hope that the movie will be better than the trailer.
Having said that, we’re unlikely to find out for ourselves since it’s currently only got an Indian cinema release date on November 24, without a UK or US release date in sight, and we can’t see that changing anytime soon…
Captain Marvel is set to start shooting in February 2018 ahead of its release date on March 8, 2019. We imagine Basmati Blues will be long forgotten by then.
