Having walked in on the Weatherfield teen preparing to leave the street forever, the flower shop owner knew within minutes what was happening.
In a bid to stop her from making a mistake, Mary, played by Patti Clare, opened up about her own rape ordeal.
“Bethany, listen to me please. When I got pregnant for quite a long time I convinced myself that romance was involved,” she recalled in the poignant scene.
“But the truth is, he as an opportunist and what he saw wasn’t somebody that he loved or someone that he liked very much, it was someone that didn’t think much of themselves. Someone who could be manipulated.

“There was no love Bethany. It was rape.”
Becoming tearful, Bethany apologised for what had happened to Mary before insisting that her relationship with Nathan was different.
“It is painful to hear believe me. I know. What Nathan and the men did to you was rape. He allowed them to rape you.”
However, it wasn’t enough as Bethany pushed passed her and made her way to Nathan.
Declaring that Bethany wasn’t going any where, Mary faced up to Nathan.
But as the teen succumbed to her boyfriend’s request to sit in the car, Mary refused to let go.

As Nathan issued a warning to her, Mary fought back.
“No! You don’t get to bully me, men like you make me sick. She is a precious human being and not your play thing.”
Showing his sinister side, Christopher Harper’s character responded: “Believe me. It’s not a game and she’s mine and what I do with her is up to me.”
As the scenes played out, viewers rushed to praise the soap and the actress.

Others praised the actress for her feisty portrayal in the shocking scenes.
“Mary has truly been the star of tonight’s #Corrie so far. Absolutely stunning performance!,” tweeted one.
“I LOVE MARY #CORRIE,” a Coronation Street viewer tweeted out.
