The harrowing scenes were kept off-camera and fans heard nothing but choked crying from the bathroom moments after Johnny found the suicide note.
Johnny went to find Aidan after he failed to show up for work and the gang were left waiting outside the factory.
After going into Aidan's flat and shouting for his son and getting no response, Johnny found a piece of paper lying on the side.
The note read: "Don't go into the bathroom – call the police".
His face dropped and he ran to the bathroom, and viewers heard him cry: "Dear, God no! What have you done?"
They then heard his agonised wails from the bathroom as it became clear what had happened.
Carla was next on the scene and she was able to calmly take control of the situation while they waited for the emergency services.
News soon spread around the Cobbles, with poor Roy having to break the news to Aidan's sister Kate.
She refused to believe it and kept insisting Aidan must be alive until Carla told her about the note and Johnny said: "It wasn't an accident."
Eva was back on the Cobbles coming to see Aidan after he left the ring at her house, and she was stunned into silence when she was told he had committed suicide.
She soon broke down in tears and couldn't barely get her words out as she struggled to get her head around the shocking news.
Eva admitted: "It's my fault… He came to see me last night. I thought we were going to get back together."
Gail gave a moving monologue urging neighbours to look after each other and not to suffer in silence, ended by saying how much her heart aches for Johnny as his "son is not coming home tonight."
She added: "I hope mine is" – a poignant reference to David's struggle with his own demons after being raped by Josh.
There was a glimmer of light at the end of the show as David finally told Shona about his ordeal and admitted that he had been considering ending his life just like Aidan.
She was able to comfort him and by the end of their powerful chat, David admitted: "I want to live."
He said: "I only told you cos with everything going on in my head, I knew I would end up like Aidan.
"I came to close, but I love you, if today's taught me anything is that's thank God – I want to live."
Viewers were overwhelmed by the powerful scenes and they flocked to Twitter to share their heartbreak over the emotional scenes.
One wrote: "Have never cried so much over a tv programme before. Absolutely heartbreaking to see how a person’s suicide affects everyone around them💔 #Corrie."
Another tweeted: "Johnys scream was devastating #corrie."
A third added: "I’m sobbing so much right now😥 #Corrie."
Another wrote: "#corrie aww half of the uk is in tears."
It comes after soap fans have branded Monday night's episode the saddest in soap history as Aidan was seen for the last time before taking his own life.
He shared a heartbreaking last dance with Eva and got one a final round in at the pub before he was seen breaking down at home alone.
The factory boss went to see Eva one final time, telling her he knows about the baby and asking her for one last dance.
The former couple then shared a tender moment as they embraced as they played song they never got a chance to dance to at their wedding.
They even exchanged I love yous, with Eva breaking down in tears.
Aidan said: "Before I messed everything up – this was always when I was most happy – it was nice, me you."
He left her and went to the pub where he made peace with Toyah, telling her "your secret's safe with me" and then bought one final round before sitting in silence as his friends talked.
Aidan ignored a call from Eva after she found he had left her ring in a box for her.
He was then seen sitting on his sofa at home alone sobbing in the darkness.
The scene then faded, leaving fans utterly distraught.
