The Girl with the Dragon Tattoo‘s pseudo-sequel/reboot is zeroing in on a royal favourite as its new Lisbeth Salander.
Sony announced earlier this year that it would moving ahead with Don’t Breathe director Fede Alvarez on a big-screen version of The Girl in the Spider’s Web, the fourth in the Lisbeth Salander book series.
However, the team also sent shockwaves by revealing that they were looking for a new actress to take over as Lisbeth from The Girl with the Dragon Tattoo star Rooney Mara.
According to The Hollywood Reporter, Sony has picked Golden Globe-winning The Crown star Claire Foy over Rogue One: A Star Wars Story‘s Felicity Jones to land the coveted gig.
All that’s standing in the way of a deal now is Claire Foy’s schedule. However, there might be an opening on that front in the very near future.
Claire will only be doing one more season of Netflix’s lavish period drama The Crown as the young Queen Elizabeth II, as writer Peter Morgan is refocusing the story around the older monarch.
“I’m on the bench. I’m not even on the bench – I’m just in a different team on my own, unemployed! We’re gone, we’re gone,” she recently joked.
“That’s not a shock – we always knew when we signed up to it, and also not to be funny but it’s also a real plus.
“As an actor there’s nothing worse than the sound of ‘seven years’. I’m sure to some people it sounds amazing but to us it’s like, seven years of playing the same person? And this is a tough job, you know?
“It’s long, a good nine-monther. And that’s a lot of your life that you sign over to it.”
If she does land the lead role in The Girl in the Spider’s Web, Claire would be following in the footsteps of both Rooney Mara and Noomi Rapace — who played Lisbeth in the original Swedish-language film series.
The Girl in the Spider’s Web is currently expected to hit cinemas on October 5, 2018, and will begin production later this year.
