Warning: This article contains spoilers from last night’s season premiere of FTWD, which airs tonight in the UK.
Fear The Walking Dead was back on screens last night and, for the first time, simulcast in the UK and the US.
It was also scary as hell. Not to mention, shocking.
Season 3 opened with a double-bill and one hell of a bang as a major character was killed off in the opening minutes of the second episode, ‘The New Frontier’.
Despite taking out multiple zombies with only a cinder block in an against-all-odds first episode, it was Travis Manawa (Cliff Curtis) who ended up jumping to his death in episode 2, after being shot in the neck during a helicopter ride with fiancé Madison (Kim Dickens) and step-daughter Alicia (Alycia Debnam-Carey).
While unexpected, his departure comes after Curtis landed a pretty major role in the next 4 Avatar films, so it seems like he’s at least avoided those pesky scheduling problems?
Understandably, Twitter was rather shocked by the grim episodes, which also saw Madison shove a spoon into someone’s eye (who yes, was Daniel Sharman, as seen in previous trailers) and a walker eat someone through a wall.
Killing Travis was a bold move, especially after piping him up as the new Rick Grimes after that zombie fight scene, but it’s also one that gives credence to a fan theory that Madison is the Rick Grimes of FTWD, despite her son Nick (Frank Dillane) being the character with the most screen time.
Here’s how Twitter reacted to the whole thing:
People were understandably SHOOK by Travis’ death:
But in a good way, because it reminded them of TWD‘s golden years:
Although at least one viewer has been burned by the we-havent-seen-a-body-yet trope before:
But TWD would never kill off Rick Grimes, right?:
Meanwhile, Madison was embracing her own inner-Rick Grimes:
And if you need us we’ll be waiting for next week like:
Fear the Walking Dead airs on AMC in the US – and AMC’s UK channel in the UK.
