Channing Tatum has revealed that Gambit is currently being rewritten.
Last month, he confirmed at Comic-Con that the X-Men spin-off was still happening despite latest director Doug Liman quitting the project. And now it seems that the success of Deadpool and Logan has led to Fox being more willing to take a chance.
“We lit a fuse on the first one and just blew it completely out of the water. I think we got lucky – we got hit with some setbacks and it was all for a good reason,” he told HeyUGuys.
“We were trying to do something completely different. We were trying to do something that this genre of movie hasn’t seen before. We kept running into the same problems, and then Deadpool and Logan came through and kicked the doors down.
“Now we’re really getting to do some of the things we’ve always wanted to do with the script – we’ve just sort of started over.”
So it sounds like even though Gambit is definitely coming, we shouldn’t be expecting it anytime soon, especially as once the script is done, they’ll need to find a director to replace Liman and original director Rupert Wyatt.
It was originally reported that Gambit was going to begin shooting earlier this year for a 2018 release, but that release date is looking increasingly unlikely.
We’ll just have to play the waiting game, it seems. Here’s hoping we won’t have to make do with the Taylor Kitsch version.
