The intense red band trailer has arrived for Guillermo del Toro’s The Shape of Water.
Set against the backdrop of Cold War era America around 1963 in a high-security government laboratory, it follows the lonely Elisa (Sally Hawkins), who is trapped in a life of silence and isolation.
Her life is changed forever when she and her co-worker Zelda (Octavia Spencer) discover a secret classified experiment, and Elisa starts to fall in love with a merman.
The impressive cast for The Shape of Water also includes Michael Shannon, Richard Jenkins, Michael Stuhlbarg and Doug Jones, who starred in del Toro’s two Hellboy movies.
Back in May, the director confirmed that while the movie has received an R-rating in the United States, it is “NOT a horror movie” and is instead a “bit of a fairy tale story”.
The mix of historical backgrounds and fantasy elements has been used to successful effect by del Toro before in The Devil’s Backbone and Pan’s Labyrinth which, following this promising first trailer, makes us extremely excited for it.
“It feels like we have an embarrassment of riches on this film,” producer J Miles Dale has previously enthused.
“An ensemble of incredible actors who are working at the very top of their craft, a wildly original story from Guillermo’s one-of-a-kind mind, and the brilliant team at Fox Searchlight to shepherd us along.”
The Shape of Water swims into US cinemas on December 8 and UK cinemas on February 16, 2018. Watch the first trailer below:
