James Bulger’s mother has revealed her horror at discovering the full extent of her murdered son’s sexual abuse.
Denise Fergus said she was "protected" so much that she didn’t get the answers she deserved and is only learning some of the truth 25 years after her son’s death.
She wants a public inquiry into exactly what officials knew when they released murderers Jon Venables and Robert Thompson in 2001 after her petition received 200,000 signatures.
Denise said Venables, who was convicted for extreme child porn in 2010, is "laughing" at her and reaffirmed her belief that he should have been sent to an adult prison.
Denise said she has only just learned the extent of two-year-old James’ sexual injuries after years of being unable to face the full horror.
Speaking on This Morning, she said: "It’s made me more determined to get justice for him. I’ve fought all these years and I’m determined to carry on for him.
"I wanted them to spend time in adult prison. I want all my questions answered. I don’t want lies or cover ups, I just want the truth and then I can move on."
Denise has compiled 14 she says remain unanswered, such as why experts missed Venables’ interest in child abuse until his conviction for extreme child porn in 2010.
She said: "One of the questions I have asked for years – ‘was James sexually abused?’. I was protected so much I didn’t get the answer to that but now I’m learning different.
"In the beginning I wanted to know exactly what happened to James. He’s still my son, I thought kick me while I’m down, I can’t get any lower. As I moved on with my life I didn’t want to know what happened to him. With all this going on I want to know now."
The devastated mother is demanding to know why the tot’s killer enables was freed to offend again after just eight years and believes the parole board did not know all the facts.
She said: "I wanted those two to spend time in an adult prison – and they’d be walking free now anyway. I wouldn’t have campaigned and got on with my life.
"I didn’t say lock them up and throw away the key. I knew they’d walk but didn’t think it would be so soon after young offenders."
Speaking about Venables, she added: "He’s laughing at everyone, the government, us, because he knows he can get away from it."
Her calls for a public inquiry were rejected by the Government last week but Denise is pleading for a U-turn.
Denise was furious when they finally responded on the 23rd anniversary of James’ death and got his name wrong.
James’ mother said: "I want to know why they rejected the petition, doesn’t public opinion count anymore? They were supposed to respond at over 10,000 signatures. We didn’t get anything.
"They chose to respond on the 23rd anniversary of James’ death when we were getting ready to go to the ceremony and they got his name wrong."
She added: "I can’t thank people enough for the way they stood by me. Without that support I wouldn’t have been able to carry on."
