Alexandra Burke has revealed that she seriously considered quitting Strictly Come Dancing due to the amount of abuse she got.
Although she reached the final of the 2017 series, the singer experienced a lot of hate from trolls and cyberbullies as negative stories in the press were written about her.
“It was hard on Strictly,” she said on ITV’s Lorraine. “There was a point where I wanted to quit the show a few weeks from the final because of the accusations.
“I sat with my brother at the kitchen table and said, ‘Is this worth my happiness?’
“He said, ‘Look how much you’ve overcome. Let’s keep going!'”
Alexandra had the last laugh, as she ended up making the final week with her professional dance partner Gorka Marquez.
Back in March, she discussed how the UK has a “massive problem” with confident women, explaining: “I find it bizarre, because women shouldn’t feel that if they come across as too confident it can be mistaken for arrogance.
“If you get a challenge, why not try your best to execute it? It’s a shame that some people mistook that determination and that will to want to do well, which everyone should have in life by the way, for arrogance or anything other than what it was.
“And I’ve always been quite sad about how that came across with some people and what they would say on Twitter.”
The 2017 series was eventually won by Joe McFadden.
Strictly Come Dancing is expected to return to BBC One later this year. Alexandra is appearing in Chess at the London Coliseum until Saturday, June 2, with selected tickets still available.
