Broadway – through the voice of stage icon Bernadette Peters – barked out a touching tribute Saturday to late actress and noted animal lover Mary Tyler Moore.
Peters, “The Good Wife” actor Michael Cerveris and a children’s choir sang the famous theme song to “The Mary Tyler Moore Show” at Broadway Barks, which promotes pet adoptions in New York.
The 19th annual event was a melancholy one, with its co-founder Moore having died in January.
“This year is different because Mary has passed away, which is heartbreaking. I really really miss her,” Peters said. “She was my Gracie to my George Burns. She loved animals so much.”
Peters’ “Mozart in the Jungle” co-star Malcolm McDowell said he was happy to help and co-host Saturday’s gig.
“I am an animal lover,” McDowell said. “I’ve always known that Bernadette has been involved with Broadway Barks, when she asked me to it, I said of course. I’m just happy to support her, and support the animals.”
The event – at Shubert Alley, in the heart of the Great White Way – brings animal shelters and rescue efforts from across New York into one spot, in hopes of adopting at least 200 animals to their new forever homes.
