He had been married 17 months to Charlotte, 35, before their bitter 2013 split.

Tragic Steven killed himself after failing to come to terms with his marriage break-up, friends said.

He was found dead after failing to arrive at the offices of the financial firm where he worked.

Shocked hotel staff had called cops after discovering his body “slumped behind a door” alongside a suicide note on Friday.

Ex Charlotte went on to wed Celtic boss Rodgers at a Scottish beauty spot in June this year.

Pals said Steven tried to put on a brave face, but found things especially hard after Charlotte moved from Liverpool to Glasgow with the couple’s young daughter.

One close friend said: “Steve thought he had the perfect life and perfect family, but one day it just all came crashing down.

“He tried to keep a brave face on, but deep down it got to him. He never really got over the split.

“It didn’t help he spent a lot of time on the road alone. Seeing his wife and daughter with a millionaire and well-known personality made it that much harder.

“The final nail was her moving up to Glasgow to be with Brendan last year — putting 200 miles between Steve and his young daughter, who he adored.

“His family is absolutely devastated. If only he knew how many people cared for him.”

Business development manager Steven was found at the hotel in Surbiton, South West London, after travelling from his home in Southport, Lancs, for meetings.

His marriage to Charlotte turned sour after “another party” got involved in the relationship.

In 2014, he was handed a 12-week night curfew by Sefton JPs after he admitted stalking his ex.

Steven had appeared distressed at the hearing, where messages he sent Charlotte emerged. He said in one: “I’m really sorry. I know I’m not allowed to contact you. I was a terrible husband.”

Rodgers was not mentioned in the court case and it is understood his relationship with Charlotte started after the couple split.

The former Liverpool boss, who met Charlotte when she was the Anfield club’s travel co-ordinator, divorced his wife Susan in 2015 after a bitter court battle over his millions.

His ex wanted half his future earnings, which included cash from his property empire. The pair, who fought over the value of his 102 rental homes, finally settled an undisclosed sum which could have topped £10million.

The couple were wed 24 years and have two kids, footballer Anton, 24, and Mischa, 21.

Rodgers married Charlotte four months after proposing in New York.

A police spokesman said of Steven’s death: “A man in his 30s was found slumped behind a door. The death is not being treated as suspicious and a suicide note was found in the room.”

Rodgers, Celtic boss since May last year, was on the touchline as his side beat Dundee. Celtic didn’t comment.
