Seventeen vehicles crash on dual carriageway as heavy snow causes travel chaos

Seventeen vehicles have been involved in a crash in Essex in south-east England as snow causes chaos on the roads.

The major incident took place on the A120 at Elmstead, blocking the road eastbound, according to Essex Police.

Video footage recorded this morning shows lorries vans and cars on the carriageway’s embankment.

Snow appears to have completely covered both sides of the road.

One person suffered minor injuries in the incident on the Clacton-bound carriageway, which occurred at 10am this morning.

Police urged drivers to avoid the route, with one lane currently closed eastbound and a warning that the entire road "may need to be closed for recovery".

Essex police tweeted: "We’re dealing with a 17 vehicle collision on the #A120 between Colchester & Elmstead Market (Clacton-bound carriageway). One person w/ minor injury & a number of cars have been damaged. Road may need to be closed for recovery."

A diversion is in operation through Frating Green to Elmstead Market with long delays expected between Elmstead and Horsley Cross, according to Essex Live .

They confirmed that they have had to attend 17 road traffic collisions today, thought to be due to the adverse weather conditions.

Highways England said the M20 in Kent had become blocked eastbound between junctions 8 and 9 by "a number" of stranded lorries, while North Yorkshire Police warned roads around Harrogate and Craven were particularly treacherous.

Up to 7ins of snow fell in southern regions overnight, with people waking up to life-threatening temperatures that plunged to to -15C as Siberian air gripped the country.

At one point, snow was falling at a rate of more than an inch an hour in the Weald district of Kent amid amber weather warnings.

Lincolnshire Police tweeted that they were already dealing with five collisions by 6.30am and said roads were "particularly hazardous".

Merseyside Police urged people to take care while driving, and said the force had received reports of a crash on the M62 just before junction 5.

And the North West Motorway Police tweeted that it was on the scene of a crash on the M6 eastbound at junction 5 after a car span across all three lanes and hit a tree.

Trains have also been affected by the snowfall, with hundreds of cancellations and disruptions on lines across the country.
