President Trump appeared to fumble the lyrics of “God Bless America” during a White House ceremony he specifically held to showcase his patriotism and encourage people to “stand for our National Anthem.”
Trump could be seen at Tuesday’s “Celebration of America” event as he began to mouth along to the song — but quickly got lost after the first few lines.
The military band behind him carried the lyrics “Stand beside her and guide her, Through the night with the light from above” as Trump looked on and nodded.
“We love our country. We respect our flag. And we always proudly stand for the national anthem,” Trump said in his speech. “We always will stand for the national anthem.”
Trump also said he wanted to “explain why young Americans stand for our national anthem.”
The president decided to hold the event instead of hosting the Super Bowl champion Philadelphia Eagles when the White House was told that only a few players from the team would attend.
“Unfortunately, only a small number of players decided to come, and we canceled the event,” Trump tweeted late Monday night.
Trump also voiced his disapproval with the NFL’s new national anthem policy — which would let players stay in the locker room during the ceremony.
“Staying in the Locker Room for the playing of our National Anthem is as disrespectful to our country as kneeling. Sorry!” Trump wrote in the same tweet.
