Thompson said in the Tweet: ‘Before/After: Big shout out to our amazing make-up team who had to transform my messed up face this morning after I came off the bike riding home yesterday.

‘(and yes, everything aches).’

Fellow BBC presenter Lukwesa Burak commented: ‘Omg Ben! Are you ok otherwise! I’ve come off my bike a couple of times – scarey. I still carry the scares & grit in my thigh. Big hug. They are super talented. X.’

Another BBC colleague Betty Redondo added: ‘Ben I wondered what you’d done ! Ouch.’

Ben began his BBC career in 2001 at Radio Wales in Cardiff and later joined BBC Breakfast as producer.

He now presents the morning news programme and also co-hosts the daily Business Live programme on the BBC News Channel and BBC World News.

Last week, Ben and his Breakfast co-host Rachel Burden took a swipe at the UK’s Eurovision entrant Mae Muller during Sunday’s edition of the show.

He said he too thought the song did not stand out above the other acts, adding that her performance slot of last in the running, as is the traditional for the host country, probably did not help.

Rachel, 48, added: ‘I just don’t think it was a song built for that Eurovision stage in the end.’
