Blake Lively, Taylor Swift, Beyonce, Lady Gaga, are Met Gala no shows

Met Gala icon Blake Lively DECLINES to attend the event and her BFF Taylor Swift, Beyonce, Lady Gaga, Selena Gomez, Katy Perry and Bella Hadid are also no-shows

  • The 2023 Met Gala took place on Monday, May 1, 2023 at the Metropolitan Museum of Art in New York City
  • The 2023 fashion extravaganza dress code was Karl Lagerfeld: A Line of Beauty, which paid tribute to the controversial fashion designer
  • Karl died February 19, 2019 at the age of 85 following complications of pancreatic cancer

The Met Gala was awash with some of the biggest names in fashion on Monday night, from Kim Kardashian, Rihanna, Kate Moss, Naomi Campbell and Rita Ora.

But a list of usual attendees failed to show this year, causing horrified fashion fans to wonder what was going on.

This year’s dress code for the fashion extravaganza was Karl Lagerfeld: A Line of Beauty – paying tribute to the controversial German fashion designer, known for his work with Chanel, who passed away in 2019.

But Blake Lively’s absence was so widely noted that she was trending on Twitter after her previous Met Gala looks were lauded year after year.

Fans tweeted: ‘There is no Met Gala without Blake Lively’ sharing her past fashion masterpieces on social media.

It’s INCOMPLETE! Fans go wild as Met Gala icon Blake Lively DECLINED to attend the event on Monday and her BFF Taylor Swift, Beyonce, Lady Gaga, Selena Gomez, Katy Perry and Bella Hadid were also no-shows

Close: This year’s dress code for the fashion extravaganza was Karl Lagerfeld: A Line of Beauty – Blake was good friends with the late designer – pictured together in 2011

But the 35-year-old did in fact confirm that she would not be attending the event, whose theme was Karl Lagerfeld: A Line of Beauty, back in April.

During the grand reopening of Tiffany & Co.’s Fifth Avenue store, she told the press that instead of gracing the carpet, she’ll be watching from home.

According to Glamour, after a reporter complimented her 2022 look, she replied, ‘Thank you, that’s very sweet. I’ll be wearing that on my couch on Monday.’

Blake and her husband Ryan Reynolds, 46, have attended the event for years.

Blake served as a co-chair at last year’s In America: An Anthology of Fashion–themed gala, arriving in a stunning Versace gown inspired by the Statue of Liberty.

But Blake and Ryan welcomed their fourth child together earlier this year and Blake only returned to the red carpet earlier this week.

Likewise, her BFF Taylor Swift, 33, was also not present after attending in previous years.

But her absence is easily explained because she has just played three shows in Atlanta, Georgia for her Eras tour, including one the night before.

They miss her! People were not happy that Blake was watching the event from her couch but she confirmed she would not be attending last month after recently welcoming her fourth child

It’s been reported that she is spending the evening preparing for her Nashville shows which she will be performing at the weekend.

Taking to Instagram, she wrote, ‘WOW Atlanta just… wow. The band, dancers, and I can’t stop talking about how insanely magical it was playing for you guys the past 3 nights.

‘You were always bouncing, dancing, screaming every lyric. And you created so many breathtaking moments for us, you know what I mean. Looove yooouuu. Hey Nashville you’re NEXT.’

Beyoncé, 41, also chose not to attend and actually hasn’t graced the Met Gala with her presence since 2016.

But it’s understandable that she might not go, because her Renaissance World Tour begins on May 10 in Stockholm, so she is busy preparing for that.

In 2022, she and her musician husband Jay-Z were photographed in Miami after spending time on a private island off the coast of Florida.

In 2021, the superstar duo jetted to Europe for a romantic holiday and were seen enjoying their time on a grand yacht.

Lady Gaga, 37, is well-known for her iconic looks on that Met Gala red carpet but she now hasn’t attended for two years in a row.

She’s been inactive on social media but has been busy promoting her new movie, Joker: Folie à Deux, which she recently wrapped filming on.

Last year, Gaga was performing in her Las Vegas residency show, Jazz and Piano, at the time, so she was unable to attend.

Her last Met Gala appearance was at the 2019 event, where she had four fabulous outfit changes – literally – on the red carpet.

Selena Gomez, 30, might have had four years away from the Met but she didn’t return to grace the red carpet either.

She’s been busy promoting Rare Beauty and Wondermind, and while she was in New York recently to shoot her TV series Only Murders in the Building’s third season, ELLE report she left the city soon after it wrapped to take a break.

Katy Perry, 38, is something of a queen when it comes to her Met Gala looks so she must have been pretty gutted to have missed this year’s spectacle.

But she had American Idol filming commitments so she was unable to make it down.

Chrissy Teigen was another no-show with no reasons given as to why she did not attend.

Supermodel Bella Hadid’s presence was notably missed at the event.

The 26-year-old is yet to publicly comment on her absence from but a recent Instagram post  indicates that she may be preoccupied with having a little down-time.

Bella recently shared videos of herself horseback riding, while thought to be on the  family farm in Pennsylvania.

Other notable absences were members of the Kardashian / Jenner family.

Neither Kris Jenner, 67, Kourtney Kardashian, 44, nor Khloe Kardashian, 38, attended, with rumours abound that their invites got lost in the post.
