This Morning: Kate Garraway wipes away a tear over Derek
ITV presenter Kate Garraway has admitted that her husband Derek Draper’s “unpredictable” health can make it feel as though her family is “living on a rollercoaster”.
The Good Morning Britain host, 56, has been married to former lobbyist Derek, also 56, since 2005.
The pair share two children together: daughter Darcey, 17, and son William, 14.
Derek fell seriously ill with coronavirus at the very start of the pandemic in March 2020, with doctors having no option but to place him in a medically induced coma and on a ventilator.
After 13 months in hospital, he was able to come home to his family, but he remains seriously ill and has been in and out of hospital ever since.

Speaking to Good Housekeeping about where they are now with Derek’s recovery, Kate confirmed: “I’d love to be able to tell you that, since Derek has been home, everything has been easy, that the miracle of him being at home has turned the day-to-day challenges into a breeze.
“But because we keep having emergency setbacks and he’s had to be rushed back into hospital so many times, the fear of him dying has never left us,” the former I’m A Celebrity… Get Me Out Of Here! contestant continued.
“The unpredictability of his day-to-day condition means we’re living on a rollercoaster.”

Kate also opened up about her new book, The Strength of Love, which chronicles her family’s ongoing struggle after Derek’s initial diagnosis and their courage to persevere.
“I can’t promise to have all the answers – my struggle is a work in progress – but in the book, I’ve shared what has helped me so far and things that have set me on a happier path,” she said.
“I’ve tried to keep things hopeful, but I’ve also written about the darker moments, too.”
Kate has also previously documented Derek’s health battle and the effect it has had on their family in her two documentaries for ITV: Finding Derek and Caring for Derek.
Kate Garraway’s book, The Strength of Love: Embracing an Uncertain Future with Resilience and Optimism, is published by Bonnier Books Ltd and available for purchase.
The November 2023 issue of Good Housekeeping is now on sale.
