Little Mix have revealed they struggled to deal with Jesy Nelson’s exit from the band last year and have had therapy since to process what happened.

The Boyz singer, 30, quit the group in December 2020 citing mental health struggles and now her former bandmate Jade Thirlwall, 28, has admitted the shock departure was hard for her, Perrie Edwards and Leigh-Anne Pinnock to come to terms with.

In the end, the trio had group therapy and each saw individual therapists to express their feelings about Jesy’s decision.

In an interview with Gay Times magazine, Jade, 28, said: ‘I think for anyone, when such a big change happens in your life, and you’ve been so used to a certain situation for so long, it’s really hard.

‘We were just cracking on as it were, and I think we were in a bit of shock for a long time because we just had to keep going.

‘It wasn’t until we had some time off at Christmas that it suddenly dawned on us what had happened. It was hard. It would have been for anyone and we’ve got each other, we have group therapy, we have our own therapists, and you do what you can.’

Jade added that the group are now stronger than ever and said Leigh-Anne and Perrie becoming mothers has put everything into perspective.

Jesy went on to launch a solo career, releasing debut single Boyz, on which she collaborated with rapper Nicki Minaj, 38, whilst Jade, Leigh-Anne, 30, and Perrie, 27, decided to carry on as a trio.

Jade insisted there were never any discussions between her and the other remaining two members about ending Little Mix.

The star said she believes Little Mix will ‘always be there’ even though all three members have started to delve into their own things.

Jade said they were initially fearful of doing this but they like getting to show the public more of themselves.

Since Jesy’s departure, Little Mix have been dogged with rumours of a split or hiatus which radio star Sonny Jay asked about during a recent appearance on Capital Breakfast.

Perrie said: ‘I think no matter what Little Mix do, whether we venture out individually, whatever we do, Little Mix is forever, like Jade said…

‘We’ll always stick together, we’ll always tour, we’ll always do things together as a group, because, Little Mix is just, it’s fire…

‘And I hate to say it, what we have is something special and we know that, and we know that Little Mix as the three of us is so so strong, so we never want that to be over, never ever ever’.

She added: ‘It wasn’t until we had some time off at Christmas that it suddenly dawned on us what had happened. It was hard’ (pictured in March 2021)

Jade then interjected to push: ‘You know like the Rolling Stones, how they’re still going… Yeah honestly! I want people to be sick of us in 50 year’s time’.

Roman Kemp pushed that the girls are ‘best friends and always in touch’, which they all agreed with during the candid chat on the show.

Their appearance on the show comes after it was revealed through Companies House documents that Jesy – and the other girls – were paid £1,901,304 through Little Mix’s touring money, Eternal Magic Touring.

She also received £1,201,390 from Eternal Dance Media, which handles their music and advertising.

The Sun revealed that the band bought Jesy out on 28 July, as documents that were made public revealed.

Jesy’s departure was attributed to the strains being in a girl band put on her mental health, which she has documented in public, including revealing a suicide attempt.

Upon the release of her first single Boyz, she was hit with allegations of ‘Blackfishing’, a row in which Leigh-Anne was soon in embroiled.

Last month, Jesy admitted it’s ‘sad’ she doesn’t speak to Little Mix anymore.

The singer told Graham Norton there’s ‘no bad blood’ between herself and ex-bandmates after the blackfishing controversy over her Boyz music video.

Jesy said she ‘loved’ her time with Little Mix and ‘wishes them all the best,’ and said that after releasing her first solo single she’s hoping to record an album in 2022.

Asked about her departure from Little Mix, Jesy said: ‘We’re not talking any more. It is sad but honestly there is no bad blood from my side, and I still love them to pieces and genuinely wish them all the best.

‘I loved my time with them, and we’ve got the most incredible memories together, but it’s just one of those things which needs to take time, so who knows.

‘To me they are still the sickest girl band in the world.’
