Love Island EXCLUSIVE: Michael apologises for ‘gaslighting’ Amber… but he reveals plans to reunite with Joanna and claims he didn’t leave with her because he’s NOT ‘a quitter’
Love Island star Michael Griffiths has apologised for ‘gaslighting’ Amber Gill as he shares his plans to reunite with Joanna Chimonides.
Dumped from the villa on Sunday, the firefighter, 27, said he wants to rekindle his romance with Joanna as he insisted the only reason he didn’t leave with her earlier this week was because he isn’t a ‘quitter’.
In an exclusive chat with the MailOnline, Michael said he had left the island at the ‘perfect’ time because he was able to make amends for ‘hurting’ Amber.
Love Island: Michael has apologised for ‘gaslighting’ ex Amber but has admitted he wants to reunite with Joanna after being dumped from the villa on Sunday night
He said: ‘Me and Amber spoke and I knew I was directing my frustration at her and when it was happening I was always thinking to myself, “why am I doing this?” because I’m literally just hurting a friend.’
The Liverpool born star claimed his romance with the beauty therapist, 21, stirred up old hurt from past relationships.
However, Michael enthused he was glad they were able to ‘clear’ the air between them and part ways as friends.
He added: ‘Amber was reminding me of past relationships and stuff like that and I did speak to her about it and it was something that I didn’t really want to put myself through again.
Change: In an exclusive chat with the MailOnline, Michael said he had left the villa at the ‘perfect’ time because he was able to make amends for ‘hurting’ Amber
‘Amber knew I was directing my frustration at her… Speaking about it was pretty nice to be honest and we’ve left things on a really high note and we are actually friends.’
Michael managed to patch things up with his ex Amber in the five extra days he stayed in the Mallorcan villa after his partner Joanna was dumped from the island.
Although the tattooed hunk admitted he was ‘tempted’ to leave with Joanna, he claimed he was glad he didn’t because he isn’t a ‘quitter’.
Will she take him back? Dumped from the villa on Sunday, the firefighter, 27, said he wants to rekindle his romance with Joanna as he insisted the only reason he didn’t left with her earlier this week was because he isn’t a ‘quitter’
‘I’ve left at the perfect time,’ he said. ‘I was tempted to leave with Joanna but I pride myself that I’m not a quitter. It was kind of a tough time for me because all I was thinking about was Joanna.’
Set to be reunited with Joanna on Aftersun, Michael has yet to speak to his ex girlfriend after she called him a ‘f***ing snake’ for not leaving the villa with her.
The firefighter shared his hopes of being able to make it up to her now he has been booted off the ITV2 summer show.
He said: ‘If Joanna tells me to leave her alone, I’d respect that and understand why she would do that. I’d be upset because I wouldn’t be able to make things work.
‘Everyone makes mistakes and I hope that I can work towards her. It’s up to her if she doesn’t want to revisit it.’

However, Michael laid out he really did have hope for them as a couple and he admitted she was always on his mind.
He added: ‘She was always on my mind and I will try to speak to her.’
There could be heartbreak ahead for Michael though as since leaving the Mallorcan villa, Joanna has been open about how furious she is that the firefighter ‘constantly denied’ his feelings for Amber and chose to stay on the show.
Speaking to The Sun earlier this week she said: ‘I asked him quite a few times and gave him every opportunity to express himself but it was constant denial. He denied that he had any feelings for her.’
‘I had a gut feeling something was still there but I never expected after just two days he would go straight back to Amber.
‘I want to have a chat with him when he comes out – for me if he does go full steam ahead with Amber then it would be good to get things out of the way with him.’

Michael meanwhile also told MailOnline that he knew Amber would recouple with newcomer Greg O’Shea and his time in the villa would be up, albeit only five days after Joanna’s dramatic exit.
The muscle-bound hunk proved there was no bad blood as he went back on his word and said Amber’s romance with Greg could work because he makes her happy.
He said: ‘I wished Amber well because we are ultimately friends, we know we are and I did say that I actually see her and Greg working.
‘I see how much he makes her smile and that makes me quite happy.’

Michael’s exit came as no one in the villa opted to save him and Francesca in a dramatic dumping, just as romance seemed more rife than ever in the famous house.
The results of the public vote revealed that Michael and Francesca, Chris and Harley and Anna and Jordan were in the bottom three, with one pair set to leave the Island.
But in a heart-stopping twist, it was their fellow Islanders who would decide which pair they wanted to save, and those with the fewest votes would be heading back to the UK.
Off we go! Michael and Francesca bid a fond farewell to the villa in Sunday’s show, after the Islanders failed to save them in the dramatic dumping
As Anna had asked Jordan to be his girlfriend just a day earlier, the decision was a no-brainer for several couples, as they insisted the pair deserved to stay on the show.
India and Ovie also opted to save Harley and Chris, which left Michael and Francesca with zero votes and thus they were dumped from the villa.
Despite learning he would he heading home, Michael seemed content with his time in the villa, and as mentioned he pulled Amber aside for a chat before they bid farewell.
On the mend: Just before his exit Michael pulled Amber aside for a chat, where he insisted he wants her ‘to be happy’ and does think her relationship with Greg could work
He said: ‘It’s the right time 100% obviously I know I wasn’t the nicest person over the last few weeks, but after seeing you and Greg more I do see you working.
‘It makes me happy seeing you happy. I just didn’t quite see it and now I see it more.’
After a quick hug, the pair appeared to part on amicable terms, with Amber now free to pursue her budding relationship with Greg.
Love Island continues on Monday at 9pm on ITV2.
