Masterchef viewers baffled over the inclusion of a vegetarian judge

‘All that work and she only eats the mashed potato!’ Masterchef viewers are baffled over the inclusion of a vegetarian judge who is unable to taste the contestants’ main dishes

Masterchef viewers have called out the inclusion of a vegetarian judge during Friday’s quarter-final heats.

2022 contestant Radha Kaushal-Bolland returned to the BBC show alongside fellow finalist Pookie Tredell and champion Eddie Scott to give their verdict on the tasty dishes whipped up by the four contestants.

However, as the trio made to taste their fish dish of Goan fish curry, Radha announced that she couldn’t eat the fish because she’s a vegetarian and proceeded to judge the accompanying salad instead.

And while she managed to give her opinion of all of the desserts and a selection of side dishes, fans were quick to air their confusion as why she was invited on the show in the first place, given she couldn’t sample most of the dishes.

With some remarking that it wasn’t fair that the contestants put ‘all the work in’ only for their food not to be tasted by one of the guest judges.

Taking to Twitter, one viewer remarked: ‘All that work and the vegetarian only eats the mashed potato’.

While a second commented: ‘Why are they inviting a vegetarian to judge a meat dish? Are they going to invite someone with a peanut allergy to judge a nut roast next?.’

A third said: ‘As a pescatarian / vegetarian, even I have to ask why do you have a vegetarian on the judging panel and not tell the contestants? Judging a salad and not the main event?’

‘Erm. If one of the judges is vegetarian, why aren’t the competitors cooking vegetarian food to enable a fair assessment?’ came the response from a fourth watcher.

‘hey ho. The BBC strikes again. A vegetarian judge on the panel giving her expert analysis (occasionally when it suits) of salad side dishes wow!! but not the fish or meat dishes that the contestants are trying their best to get perfect. Explain that philosophy!!’ said a fifth.

A sixth viewer questioned: ‘I don’t get why she’s back. I know she was in the final last year but with being a vegetarian she won’t be eating anything the contestant’s bring out.’

With another agreeing: ‘Ok: by all means be a master chef judge, but don’t come on, say you’re vegetarian and then refuse to taste some of the food, BCS THEN YOU CAN’T JUDGE IT…’

After her fellow judges gave their verdicts on the fish curry, Radha explained: ‘I’ve not had the fish being a vegetarian and all, but the salad is genius!

‘It’s so hot that sauce, it’s got the cooling from the salad. I’, really enjoying Vanessa’s dish, it’s amazing.’

Radha, who now works as a private chef, also missed out on other dishes including steamed fish, chicken ballotine and octopus.

At the end of the show, main judges John Torode and Gregg Wallace opted to send Matthew home, meaning Vanessa, Terri and Nickolas were through to the next round.

Masterchef continues Tuesday at 9pm on BBC One.
