Stars with famous parents are mocked on New York Magazine cover

Busted for nepotism! Dakota Johnson, Maya Hawke, Zoe Kravitz, and more stars with famous parents are mocked on New York Magazine’s The Year of the Nepo Baby cover

Dakota Johnson, Maya Hawke, Zoë Kravitz and more stars with famous parents were mocked on New York Magazine’s The Year of the Nepo Baby cover.

Celebrity nepotism is nothing new but the insult ‘nepo baby’ has become increasingly popular as shorthand to deride it.

Vulture senior writer Nate Jones spoke with managers and casting directors in the industry, one of whom simply stated: ‘A lot of the children of famous people are not good.’

‘Someone once said to me, “We should hire so-and-so because their parents will come to the opening night,” a veteran casting director recalled.

‘She has her mother’s eyes. And agent’: Dakota Johnson, Maya Hawke, Zoë Kravitz, and more stars with famous parents were mocked on New York Magazine’s The Year of the Nepo Baby cover

‘A big agency will write and say, “This is so-and-so’s kid,” and you understand that to mean “So you have to see this kid.” I have learned to simply say, “Not right for the role. But lovely.” There are a number of veiled responses rather than saying, “Are you guys kidding me?”‘

Like Laura Dern, Michael Douglas, Kate Hudson and Gwyneth Paltrow – Dakota comes from a dynasty of famous actors – her mother is Oscar nominee Melanie Griffith and her grandmother is Golden Globe winner Tippi Hedren.

The 33-year-old Independent Spirit Award winner – whose father is Emmy nominee Don Johnson – was famously crowned Miss Golden Globe in 2006, a debutante-style title reserved for the daughters of celebrities.

Suspiria director Luca Guadagnino said of casting Johnson as the powerful lead in his 2019 horror remake: ‘I can see Tippi Hedren [in her].’

Before anyone saw her in Stranger Things, Maya enlisted her famous father Ethan Hawke to appear in her audition tape for the role of Flower Girl in Once Upon a Time in Hollywood, and director Quentin Tarantino was impressed.

The 24-year-old daughter of Uma Thurman arguably didn’t pull off her one pivotal scene as a jittery Manson Family member (based on Linda Kasabian) who got cold feet and fled the scene of the Sharon Tate murders in 1969.

‘I think it’s cool that when I play shows, young queer women who love [my Stranger Things character Robin Buckley] can come and connect to my music, too,’ Hawke told Flood Magazine in August.

‘There’s a lot of cohesion there. I don’t feel like they’re so disjointed, or I need them to be different in the same way that I don’t need people to pretend I don’t have famous parents. I love Stranger Things! I love Robin. I love my parents. I love writing music. And I’m me in all of those situations.’

And while Zoë admitted to GQ last month that she had a ‘deep insecurity’ about being the daughter of Lenny Kravitz and Lisa Bonet, she scoffed: ‘It’s completely normal for people to be in the family business.’

Lily-Rose Depp was blasted on TikTok last month for ‘being delusional’ over how having actor Johnny Depp and model-singer Vanessa Paradis as her parents has given her direct ties to modeling for Chanel (at 5ft3in) and acting in films.

‘The internet cares a lot more about who your family is than the people who are casting you in things. Maybe you get your foot in the door, but you still just have your foot in the door. There’s a lot of work that comes after that,’ the 23-year-old star of HBO’s The Idol told ELLE.

‘It’s weird to me to reduce somebody to the idea that they’re only there because it’s a generational thing. It just doesn’t make any sense. If somebody’s mom or dad is a doctor, and then the kid becomes a doctor, you’re not going to be like, “Well, you’re only a doctor because your parent is a doctor.” It’s like, “No, I went to medical school and trained.”‘

Association: The most popular outlet of nepotism is the modeling industry where progeny like Paul Walker’s daughter Meadow, Stephen Baldwin’s daughter Hailey Bieber, Kris Jenner’s daughter Kendall, Kamala Harris’ stepdaughter Ella Emhoff, and Cindy Crawford’s (L, pictured March 1) daughter Kaia Gerber (R) found a fast track

Vulture senior writer Nate Jones wrote: ‘The model Kaia Gerber has profited handsomely from looking exactly like her mother, Cindy Crawford. While Bruce Willis (3-L) and Demi Moore’s (2-L) daughters were undoubtedly hampered by inheriting their father’s most famous feature, his chin’

One manager said the more these models speak the less relatable they become to the public: ‘On Instagram, a lot of them are not necessarily showcasing their life as a socialite. They’re like, “Oh my God, look at me at this dive bar.” Girl, weren’t you just on a yacht last night?’

Hint, hint! Earlier this year, Reese Witherspoon (L) told Mindy Kaling (R) that her son Deacon (with ex-husband Ryan Phillippe) was interested in following his parents’ famous footsteps

It’s all who you know! The 43-year-old Never Have I Ever co-creator promptly cast the ‘talented, great-looking’ 19-year-old (2-L) as Parker in two episode of the Netflix show’s third season

MailOnline readers are only too familiar with David and Victoria Beckham’s eldest son Brooklyn Peltz Beckham (L, pictured in 2021), whom The Guardian blasted as incapable of having ‘what other mortals might regard as amateur hobbies without considering them nascent professional empires’

The 23-year-old Englishman admitted to Bustle last month: ‘I’m not a professional chef – at all. I’ve never said that. I never would say that. Obviously, my dad [retired soccer star David Beckham] knew what he was doing at a very young age. I’ve only been doing cooking for not even three years’ (pictured in November)

Nothing new! Hollywood nepotism dates as far back as Douglas Fairbanks Jr. in the 1920s, Liza Minnelli in the seventies, and well into the 1980s with Jeff Bridges (R, pictured in 1990), the son of Lloyd Bridges (L)

The 73-year-old Oscar winner told the authors of Hollywood Dynasties back in 1984: ‘For a long time, I wondered whether my career had come to me because of my own talents or because of some kind of genteel nepotism. The guilt caused big problems for me’ (pictured in 1989)

‘I’ve never said that. I never would say that. Obviously, my dad [retired soccer star David Beckham] knew what he was doing at a very young age. I’ve only been doing cooking for not even three years.’

Brooklyn stressed: ‘It’s okay to be 25, 26, or even 30 and not know what you’re doing yet. You know what I mean?’
