Tom Hanks 'doesn't understand' why Tim Allen wasn't in Lightyear

Tom Hanks ‘doesn’t understand’ why they ‘didn’t let Tim Allen do’ the voice of Buzz in Lightyear

Two-time Oscar winner Tom Hanks came to the defense of his longtime Toy Story castmate Tim Allen, who was controversially not cast as the voice of Buzz Lightyear in the new Lightyear origin movie.

‘How about that?’ the 65-year-old acting legend – who voiced Sheriff Woody Pride – lamented to CinemaBlend’s ReelBlend podcast on June 24.

‘Actually, I wanted to go head-to-head with Tim Allen [at the box office with Elvis] and then they didn’t let Tim Allen do it. I don’t understand that.’

Tom stressed that he’s simply grateful people are returning to the cinema following years of stress and isolation amid the COVID-19 pandemic.

‘I want to go back in the theater with a bunch of strangers and leave with something in common,’ Hanks said.

‘That’s what I want to do and, going to see a movie with [Tim Allen] – I’m looking forward to that.’

On June 29, the 69-year-old comedian – who’s a rare Hollywood fiscal conservative – said he was approached about the standalone Buzz film ‘many years ago’ during a voiceover session.

‘But the brass from the first four movies is not this. This is a whole new team that really had nothing to do with the first movies,’ Tim (born Timothy Alan Dick) told Extra.

‘I thought it was a live action thing with real humans – not an animated thing. And really, it’s Hanks and I. There’s really no Toy Story, Buzz without Woody. I’m not sure what the idea… I’m a plot guy.

‘If this was done in 1997 it would seem to be a big adventure story. And as I see, it’s not a big adventure story. It’s a wonderful story, but it just doesn’t seem to have any connection to the toy. It has no relationship to Buzz. It’s just no connection. I wish there was a better connection.’

Some suspected that Allen – who openly hates paying taxes and attended the 2016 inauguration of former President Donald Trump – might not have been cast because of his political views.

Could it be? Some suspected that the Emmy nominee – who openly hates paying taxes and attended the 2016 inauguration of former President Donald Trump – might not have been cast because of his political views

Chris Evans – who voices Buzz in Lightyear – admitted he blatantly copied the Emmy nominee’s deep-voiced delivery of the Space Ranger’s iconic catchphrase ‘to infinity and beyond.’

‘I just said, “I’m doing Tim and I don’t care,”‘ the 41-year-old action star told the Daily Telegraph on June 13.

‘It makes you feel so nervous to hear yourself out loud – it almost feels wrong. It’s like trying to say “Bond, James Bond” and you’re like “nope, nope, nope – that’s for someone else.”‘

Chris continued: ‘[Tim Allen] is Buzz Lightyear to me too – I grew up on these movies, so you certainly want to use it as a template…And he did such a good job, I would be a fool to not absorb some of the choices. But at the same time you have to kind of make some kind of fresh track in the snow.’

Lightyear director Angus MacLane defended his casting of Evans by saying his version of Buzz is more ‘action hero’ than the ‘goofy, dumb comic relief’ version Tim created.

‘[Our Buzz] is serious and ambitious and funny, but not in a goofy way that would undercut the drama,’ the 47-year-old filmmaker told Vanity Fair on June 9.

‘Chris Evans has the gravitas and that movie-star quality that our character needed to separate him and the movie from Tim’s version of the toy in Toy Story.’

Lightyear producer Galyn Susman also said casting Allen ‘really didn’t make sense’ since their movie was ‘not the toy world.’

And this isn’t the first time someone else voiced Buzz as Pat Fraley played the test pilot in CD-ROM game Disney’s Animated Storybook: Toy Story and PC game Disney’s Activity Center: Toy Story way back in 1996.

Daytime Emmy nominee Patrick Warburton also voiced the character in UPN/ABC’s 2000 cartoon Buzz Lightyear of Star Command.
