Tom Holland, the beloved Spider-Man star, recently shared that he will be taking a much-needed break from acting following his involvement in the upcoming series, The Crowded Room.
This ten-part psychological thriller is loosely based on the true story of Billy Milligan's arrest in 1979, as depicted in Daniel Keyes' non-fiction book. In addition to his acting role, Tom, 27, also took on the role of producer for the series. However, he openly admitted that the intense nature of the project took a toll on him.
He said: "I love the learning curve of becoming a producer. I’m no stranger to hard work. I’ve always sort of lived by this idea that hard work is good work. I really enjoyed it, but then again, the show did break me. There did come a time where I was sort of like, "I need to have a break," I disappeared."
Speaking about his future plans, he told Extra : "I went to Mexico for a week and had some time on a beach. And I’m now taking a year off, and that is a result of how difficult this show was. I am excited to see how it turns out. I feel like our hard work wasn’t in vain."
He added: “It was a tough time, for sure. We were exploring certain emotions that I have definitely never experienced before. And then on top of that, being a producer, dealing with the day-to-day problems that come with any film set, just added that extra level of pressure.”
According to Variety, Tom’s character is vaguely based on Billy, who was arrested for the rape of three women in 1979. Speaking to Entertainment Weekly in May, Holland said filming the show had left him struggling to break from the role, and that he even considered shaving his head to “get rid” of the character.
He explained: “I was seeing myself in him, but in my personal life. I remember having a bit of a meltdown at home and thinking, like, ‘I’m going to shave my head. I need to shave my head because I need to get rid of this character.’”
The official synopsis reads: “The Crowded Room follows Danny Sullivan, a man who is arrested following his involvement in a shooting in New York City in 1979. A captivating thriller told through a series of interviews with curious interrogator Rya Goodwin, Danny’s life story unfolds, revealing elements of the mysterious past that shaped him, and the twists and turns that will lead him to a life-altering revelation.”
Tom's journey in the entertainment industry began on the stage, where he showcased his talent by taking on the lead role in Billy Elliot The Musical for an impressive two-year run during his youth.
This breakthrough opportunity opened doors for him in the world of television and film. In 2015, he garnered attention from Hollywood producers through his performance in The Heart Of The Sea, where he held his own among acclaimed actors such as Chris Hemsworth and Cillian Murphy.
The following year marked a significant milestone for Tom as he made his Marvel debut in Captain America: Civil War. Since then, his career has only gone from strength to strength.
