Justin Bieber is back – well, at least the Justin Bieber who actually performs for a living. Last night, he joined Ariana Grande as her special guest for a surprise appearance at Coachella. The performance marks Justin’s first live performance on a big stage in two years.
Ariana kicked off her second night as headliner at this year’s festival in Indio, California last evening by revisiting a similar set list to the one she performed at Coachella the previous Sunday. Then she shocked the crowd by bringing out Justin toward the end of the set, adding that “this was not planned.”
“We thought it might be fun to do something for you guys,” Ariana told the audience just as Justin stepped on stage. Even before the crowd’s screams died down, Justin began performing his 2015 hit, “Sorry.”
“I haven’t been on stage in like two years. I came out here I had no idea I was going to be on stage tonight,” Bieber told the Coachella main stage audience . “So anyways this is my first time on stage in two years. I had to get my groove back, my swag back, you know what I’m saying? So, thank you so much, Coachella. Thank you so much, Ariana Grande. We love you so much, man. Thank you so much.”
Before leaving, Justin had one more surprise for the audience. “By the way,” he added, “album coming soon.”
While Justin’s fans clearly appreciated his return to the stage, a number on social media complained that he appeared to be lipsyncing to a heavy backing track during the performance. Perhaps the decision was made to go with a heavy backing track after all of the audio difficulties that Ariana experienced with Nicki Minaj’s live appearance a week earlier, but it still detracted from the moment for many people.
