But it isn’t just health care professionals who qualify for our annual celebration.
Most six-year-old children are busy watching CBeebies but little Henry Coles from Knowle, Bristol, isn’t like most of his peers.
Henry saved mum Beth Uren’s life when the 31-year-old full-time student — who has Type 1 diabetes — had a hypoglycaemic attack at home in March.
Having been taught by Mum to dial 999, he knew just what to do and now he has been nominated for a Young Hero Award by one of his heroes — the BBC kids presenter Andy Day.
Beth says: “I woke up one day unable to really move or speak properly. I was having an extreme hypo.
NOMINATE AT THESUN.CO.UK/NHS-HEROES-WHO-CARES-WINS
“I managed to call Henry into my room and point to my Lucozade. I tried to crawl down the stairs, at which point I passed out.
“When I came to, Henry was sat next to me with the paramedics, he’d called 999 and told the call handler where we lived.
“His actions saved my life.
“He adores Andy so getting the nomination from him is really special. They’ve definitely bonded over dinosaurs, they’re Henry’s favourite thing.” Andy was impressed, and says he’ll teach daughter Ruby to do what Henry did.
He said: “I grew up with my mum having Type 1 diabetes and I recall her hypos and how scary that was.
“Henry’s an amazingly brave little boy with a great personality. He knows his dinosaurs inside out and he’s got such a special bond with his mum Beth.
“They’re an amazing family and it’s a real honour to nominate him for the Young Carer award.
He’s a winner in my book.”
