Darren Kennedy: Ultra violet – purple picks will see you through 2019

While ‘Living Coral’ might be the official shade of the year (according to the folks at the Pantone Color Institute, anyway) you’d be forgiven for thinking it’s purple. Rich, deep purple – let’s go ahead and call it Cadbury’s Purple – has been appearing in collections for a few seasons and has already become a prevalent hue on Instagram thanks to fashion ‘grammers.

On the catwalk for spring/summer 2019, lilac and lavender dresses that were equal parts formal and flirty were seen at Emilia Wickstead, Badgley Mischka, Kate Spade and Molly Goddard. Marc Jacobs put his own theatrical spin on a monochromatic look by showcasing a ‘Mad Hatter’-style outfit complete with fascinator, knee socks and a giant organza bow.

And judging by the recent autumn/winter 2019 shows, purple won’t to be going anywhere anytime soon. It was prominent at Derek Lam, Michael Kors, Tom Ford and Anna Sui, to name but a few.

Moving on from regal purple, another colour is steadily coming to the fore this season: pistachio. Leave it to style star Alexa Chung to be one of the first to pull off this dreamy seafoam-y hue at the Stella McCartney show during Paris Fashion Week. Bonus points for styling it with velvet Mary Jane

flats which, of course, are also having a major comeback.

One for the boys

Eco Marine hand balm

After that somewhat unexpected cold snap this month (is snow in March the new normal?) we should probably talk about rehydration. If your hands are on the chapped and dry side and look like they could do with some TLC, this natural brand – which uses harvested seaweed – offers a nourishing balm that helps to repair skin while providing vitamins to damaged skin cells. Plus, the slick packaging is great, making it an ideal addition to your work or gym bag.

Top Tip

It’s safe to say that ‘floss heels’ – that is minimalist sandals with multiple razor-thin straps – will be the breakout shoe of the summer season. While some of the offerings from edgier brands like By Far, Miista and Rejina Pyo will set you back a couple of hundred, Mango has your back with a dead ringer pair for just under €50 (see above). Order them quick!
