A GARDENING guru has revealed the one thing you need to stop binning if you want to get your flowerbeds blooming in time for summer. 

TikTokker @gardenshare suggested saving your empty eggshells and adding them to your soil to give them a nutrient boost. 



And according to the green-fingered content creator, coffee granules and banana peels offer the same benefits too. 

In a new TikTok reel, the gardener said: “Homemade Eggshell Calcium Fertilizer Nutrient Soil. 

“Don’t throw [away] eggshells. 

“Dry it in the sun. Store it.

“Pour into the blender, close the lid and crush it.”

During the 31-second video, he is seen pouring the crushed eggshells into a box with some soil from his garden, before thoroughly mixing the two. 

He then divided the mixture into various plant pots, ready to add flower or vegetable seeds. 

Experts at Gardenesque have seemingly confirmed the hack, claiming on their website: “The shell of a chicken egg is comprised of about 96% calcium carbonate (CaCO3).

“Calcium is an essential plant nutrient and moderates soil acidity.  

“Fast-growing plants deplete the soil of calcium very quickly so eggshells are an ideal supplement and feed for outdoor flowers, vegetables and fruit trees in your garden.

“During the winter months, crush the shells by using a mortar and pestle and sprinkle over the container or garden border where you will plant come springtime. 

“Alternatively, you can add crumbled eggshell directly into the bottoms of your planting holes.” 

Fans loved the quick and easy tip, with the video gaining more than 475,200 likes and 6.5 million views. 

In the comments, other TikTokkers shared their reactions, with one writing: “My grandmother did this and her vegetables in her garden grew nicely.”

“I save ALL my eggshells from winter so I can do this for my garden. glad others know to do this,” commented another. 

A third added: “Awesome.”

Someone else suggested: “Or you can just compost them and bypass all the extra work.”
