DECORATING any room in your home comes with a lot of important decisions that need to be made.

But since most families spend the most time in their kitchens, getting it right is vital.

It turns out the colour you paint your kitchen can make the biggest difference, but picking the wrong one can made the room feel so claustrophobic.

Ryan McDonough, interior design expert at MyJobQuote, told Express.co.uk the colours that should be avoided at all costs.

He said: “Kitchens are the room within the home where most families spend the majority of their time.

“When painting your kitchen, it’s important to stay away from basic browns, dark shades of red, green, purple and blue.

“These shades can really bring your walls inward.

“This can create an enclosed feel, and makes kitchens feel claustrophobic.”

The pro suggested that people make use of the natural light that their kitchen already has when decorating to help give the illusion of more space.

“It’ll give your kitchen that sparkly, polished look," he quipped.

If you want a darker look go for a pure-black rather than a dark grey and make sure there's plenty of light to contrast, Ryan explained.

Of course, if you're decorating with the aim of selling the rules are slightly different and you stick to bright neutral colours like white and begie.

Ryan added: “Soft muted blue and green shades also work well to give the home a welcoming vibe."

Ultimately, they might be better options for bedrooms or bathroom because of the relaxing vibe they create.

If you want to liven up your kitchen oranges and yellows can be a great choice because of the exciting energy they can bring to a space.
