Nike Uses Recycled Uppers for New Footwear Pack

Nike has unveiled its latest sustainable release, bringing recycled uppers to a number of its best-loved silhouettes. The Nike Sportswear Recycled Canvas pack features five silhouettes — the Air Force 1 ‘07, Air Max 90, Air Max 95, Daybreak-Type and Cortez — all of which have been constructed from at least 20 percent recycled materials.

All of the sneakers feature a recycled canvas upper, which is used with yarn derived from post-industrial Nike textile waste. Elsewhere, other sustainable features include the Flyleather swooshes and backtabs, which are constructed from at least 80 percent leather fibers. The pack also includes recycled foam tongues and laces, while the Daybreak-Type and Cortez sneakers are finished with Crater foam in their midsoles.

The recycled materials are referenced through the sneaker’s aesthetics, which include exposed hems, visible stitching and a rougher texture across the upper.
