Piers Morgan says ‘free speech matters’ as he brags over his soaring book sales

Piers Morgan has bragged his book is number one in the charts after his sudden Good Morning Britain exit, insisting "free speech matters".

The 55-year-old former Good Morning Britain star quit the ITV show last week following a complaint from Meghan Markle herself on his reporting of her and her husband Prince Harry.

ITV confirmed the Duchess of Sussex had contacted them and complained about Piers after he accused her of lying about being suicidal live on air on Monday morning following her and Harry's interview with Oprah Winfrey.

On Saturday, Piers took to Twitter to show off his book sales, revealing his recent autobiography Wake Up had climbed into the number one spot on Amazon.

He bragged: "BOOM! Wake Up is now Britain’s No1 best-selling book. Amazing. Free speech matters. Very touched to see you many people support me. THANK you."

Piers argued his comments about Meghan were "free speech," while 41,000 people complaining to Ofcom argued he was "bullying" her.

Piers had many fans rushing to gush over him in his comments.

One wrote: "Hated you for ages. Now think you are Jesus."

Another commented: "I’m so going to order this now!!!! We should always be allowed to speak our mind and have our say, miss you on GMB!"

"You better buy some more cigars. In this day and age, strength of character and sticking by what you believe in has been eradicated due to social pressure. Thanks for being yourself," wrote one.

The change in position had occurred over a matter of hours, as earlier in the day, the former GMB star took to his platform to reveal the book had landed in the number two spot.

Plugging the memoir, which was released last October, he wrote: "So gratifying to see my book "Wake Up" now at No2 in the Amazon chart. Thanks to everyone who's bought it in support of my battle to defend free speech, which has never seemed more vital. It's the cornerstone of any democracy.

"As for the haters, I refer you to what my hero Sir Winston Churchill once said: ‘You have enemies? Good. That means you’ve stood up for something, sometime in your life.’

"If you want to support my campaign to save free speech, order Wake Up now, read it, then share with your friends. The Amazon link is in my bio. Thank you!"

The gloating comes after Piers' son Spencer claimed a passerby hurled abuse at them in the street while they were out walking together.

Taking to his Twitter account, Piers' son Spencer wrote about the experience.

The 27-year-old journalist said they were on a socially-distanced walk when a passerby shouted "revolting people" at them.

Spencer also dubbed the person a "woke Karen" in his tweet.

He tweeted: "Wow. Just went on one of them lame Covid walks with @piersmorgan."

The tweet continued: "The level of public support on the street was actually mind-blowing. The social media bubble is fake. Team Piers is real. And it’s huge."

But he added: "Admittedly one dumba** woke Karen did walk past and say ‘you revolting people’ as two couples were praising him haha."

Despite being abused in the street, Piers book Wake Up: Why the world has gone nuts has reached number one in the Amazon charts.
