Time to Over-Analyze the "Music for a Sushi Restaurant" Lyrics From 'Harry's House'

Hey, hi, hello and good morning to Harry Styles and Harry Styles only. After much anticipation, the pop star’s third studio album Harry’s House was released today, and the people could not wait to get into his latest project! For instance, as I write this, I can hear my New York City neighbor fully blasting the new album—and I mean fully blasting. It is 10 a.m., mind you. (Currently we are on the first single and fourth track of the album, the vibe that is “As It Was,” and steadily making our way through the track list. Emphasis on the “we” and “our” here!)

The album’s opening song “Music for a Sushi Restaurant” is a real attention grabber too, and it was actually in the running to be the album’s name.

“I was in a sushi restaurant in Los Angeles with my producer and one of our songs came on from the last album, and I kind of said, like, ‘This is really strange music for a sushi restaurant,’ and then I was like, ‘Oh, that would be a really fun album title,'” Harry told NPR. “And then as this song started being made, I kind of just said “Music at a Sushi Restaurant.””

On it’s face, the song seems a little silly and fun, but basically it’s “about ingredients for making sushi while relating it to his desire for a relationship,” according to Genius. I mean, how much money would you pay for Harry to imply that you’re so hot that he can, indeed, “cook an egg on you”? The only answer here is your entire life savings, even though he’s probably definitely talking about his GF Olivia Wilde.

Using food as a metaphor is pretty on brand for Harry, too, since we know “Watermelon Sugar” has not a damn thing to do with watermelons. It’s also worth noting that Harry enters his scatting? era?? in this song, so there’s that.

Anyway, here are the full lyrics to “Music for a Sushi Restaurant” from Genius for you to over-analyze! Now excuse me while I go jam out with my neighbor.

[Intro]
Oh!
Ba, ba-ba
Ba-ba, ba-ba

[Verse 1]
Green eyes, fried rice, I could cook an egg on you
Late night, game time, coffee on the stove (Oh)
You’re sweet ice cream, but you could use a flake or two
Blue bubblegum twisting ’round your tongue

[Pre-Chorus]
I don’t want you to get lost
I don’t want you to go broke
I want you

[Interlude]
(It’s ’cause I love you, babe)
(In every kind of way)
(Just a little taste) Oh!
(You know I love you, babe)

[Chorus]
Ba, ba-ba
Ba-ba, ba-ba
(You know I love you, babe) Ooh
Ba, ba-ba
Ba-ba, ba-ba

[Verse 2]
Excuse me, green tea
Music for a sushi restaurant
Brown eyes on rice (Scooby-dooba-dooba-do-boo-boo)
Music for a sushi restaurant
Music for a sushi restaurant
Music for whenever you want (Scooby-dooba-dooba-do-boo-boo)

[Pre-Chorus]
I’m not goin’ to get lost
I’m not goin’ to go broke
Staying cool

[Chorus]
(You know I love you, babe)
Ba, ba-ba
Ba-ba, ba-ba
(You know I love you, babe) Ooh
Ba, ba-ba
Ba-ba, ba-ba (Ah!)

[Bridge]
If the stars were edible, and our hearts were never full
(Ba, ba-ba, ba-ba, ba-ba)
Could we live with just a taste?
(Ba, ba-ba, ba-ba, ba-ba)
Just a taste

[Pre-Chorus]
Ba, ba-ba
(It’s ’cause I love you, babe)
Ba-ba
(In every kind of way)
Ba-ba
(Just a little taste)

[Chorus]
(You know I love you, babe)
Ba, ba-ba
Ba-ba, ba-ba
(You know I love you, babe) Ooh
Ba, ba-ba
Ba-ba, ba-ba (Ah!)
