Giant ‘UFO’ spotted hovering over UK mountain debunked as stunning phenomenon

Aliens looked to have arrived in Wales following the appearance of an unusual 'UFO' hovering above a mountain in Eryri, Snowdonia.

Residents of Gwynedd have joked that a stunning cloud shaped like a flying saucer could mean that their time on Earth is limit with visitors swooping in to abduct them.

The jaw-dropping spectacle was seen hovering over Mynydd Mawr, about four miles away from Yr Wyddfa, NorthWalesLive reports.

Thanks to its perfectly curved layers and round structure, imaginations of otherworldly creatures descending from a UFO have been sent wild.

However, despite appearances this isn't Independence Day, and there is a slightly less scary explanation for the mysterious object.

It will come as no surprise that the object is not in fact a flying saucer, but actually a regular phenomenon around the globe, though rarer in Wales.

In fact, it is an odd lens-shaped cloud known as a lenticular cloud.

The Met Office says that these clouds form when air blows across a mountain range and sets up a train of large standing waves in the air downstream, like ripples forming in a river when water flows over an obstruction.

If there is enough moisture in the air, the rising motion of the wave will cause water vapour to condense, forming the unique appearance of lenticular clouds.

These clouds, the Met Office says, are believed to be one of the most common explanations for UFO sightings across the world.
