Horrified hiker stumbles across alien creature that ‘smells like rotting flesh’

A hiker who found an alien-like creature whilst out on a walk in the woods has looked to the internet to see if people were able tell them what it was.

The image shared on Reddit, showing the black and red organism with tentacle-like arms sprouting from the body looking as though it has come from the ground, was taken on Mount Nebo, near Brisbane in Australia.

User Aus556762 posted the picture with the caption: ""WTF is this? Smells like rotting flesh. Mt Nebo", the Mirror reports.

They also added that the smell – which they compared to 'death' – was eye-wateringly strong from a metre away,

The user added that it was also attracting flies, and people said it reminded them of something from Resident Evil or Stranger Things.

But one viewer was actually able to identify the bizarre being as aseroe rubra, a fungi more commonly known as a 'stinkhorn' in a nod to its foul smell.

It's said to 'bear its spores in a brownish slime which smells of faeces' to attract flies for pollination.

Many people agreed with the assessment, and another asked: "I have a couple of these f***ers in my yard, my question is can you burn them with fire or how else can you eradicate them?

"Standard weed killer? They smell like corpse. Not that I know what corpses smell like, just saying."

One advised: "They are easy enough to pull out and dump in the rubbish bin. No need for chemicals."

A second said: "Only the brown bit on the top stinks. You could probably just spray it with the hose to disperse it."

And one even said they can be edible, but no one seemed very keen on the idea, as they claimed: "You can eat them when they’re young and still in the 'egg' phase.

"There’s even a YouTube video of a guy eating them."

But not everyone was convinced by the diagnosis, as someone else added: "No way this isn't an alien."
