‘Bullet Train’ Still Leads Box Office on Lowest Grossing Weekend This Summer

While the Brad Pitt-starring action comedy drops more than 50 percent on its second weekend, ‘Top Gun: Maverick’ rises back to No. 3 with a 1.6 percent increase in ticket sales.

AceShowbiz -“Bullet Train” is still on track to arrive at No. 1 on North American box office. The action comedy film maintains its top spot with an estimated $13.4 million on its second weekend, dropping 55.4% from last week.

“Bullet Train” is considered the last big Hollywood studio title of summer 2022. With no new major studio releases this week, overall revenue for the weekend was around $66 million, marking the lowest grossing weekend to date this summer.

David A. Gross, who runs the movie consulting firm Franchise Entertainment Research, sees the silver lining amid the lack of blockbusters. “The upside to the thin schedule is that movies are opening on, and holding more screens than before, and they’re playing longer to bigger domestic multiples,” he says. “There’s more room in the market, and each film is benefiting. But there’s no question,” he adds, “the total box office would be bigger with more studio releases.”

DC League of Super-Pets” remains steady on its third weekend, bagging an estimated $7.17 million at No. 2. It goes neck and neck with “Top Gun: Maverick“, which rises back to No. 3 with approximately $7.15 million or an impressive 1.6% rise in ticket sales. The Tom Cruise-starrer is now close to crossing the $700 million mark domestically after surpassing “Titanic” as the seventh-biggest film ever at the domestic box office last week.

The rest of the top five belong to holdovers. “Thor: Love and Thunder” holds on to the fourth spot with approximately $5.31 million, while “Nope” trails behind with an estimated $5.3 million.

No newcomers manage to crack into the top five this week, with “Bodies Bodies Bodies” scoring the highest entry in the top 10 and beating expectations with an estimated $3.2 million from 1,290 locations. The Gen Z horror comedy jumps 15-8 after opening in limited theaters last week.
