Dan Walker grills Dominic Raab about his holiday

On Wednesday morning, BBC Breakfast presenter Dan Walker received a ton of heat from viewers after his fiery interview with Foreign Secretary Dominic Raab. Although the conversation began on the topic of UK troops leaving Afghanistan, the interview soon took a turn after Dan grilled Dominic on his holiday in Greece. Despite the backlash, the presenter hit back at the criticism and insisted he was just doing his job.
Dominic initially sat down with Dan Walker and Sally Nugent to discuss plans the government had for the UK troops and how long they would stay in Afghanistan.
However, the heated conversation turned fiery when Dan revealed he took to social media to ask viewers what they should ask the Foreign Secretary – with many inquiring about his holiday.
He stated: “The reason for that Mr Raab, whilst the Taliban were marching on Kabul, while British troops were under pressure, the vision that many people have and still have this morning was that you were on a beach in Crete and you didn’t come home for another two days?”
“So Dan, first of all with hindsight I wouldn’t have gone away at all, “ Dominic responded.
The politician went on to assure viewers, while his family were on the beach he was at the apartment and tuned into the Cobra meeting.
He explained: “The idea I was lounging on a beach or one report that I was paddleboarding in the ocean, these things are just nonsense when they’re put around.”
However, Dan and Dominic clashed when the presenter asked: “Were you then told or asked to come home on Friday and then persuaded the Prime Minister to allow you to stay until Sunday?”
To which, Dominic abruptly replied: “That is all nonsense, I’m not going to go back into the answers I’ve given over the week again but that is not accurate.”
After the interview aired, Dan was accused of being “nasty” and “unpleasant” by viewers who were taken aback by his line of questioning.
Others took to Twitter to slam the journalist for his approach to Dominic.
One wrote: “BBC trash yet again even though people are on holiday they can still communicate, it’s like working from home.”
Speaking on The Profile podcast, the presenter defended himself and stated: “I simply asked the Foreign Secretary for facts, if that is ‘nasty’ and ‘unpleasant’ then I’m not sure you’ve watched enough telly.”
He explained: “I know I can’t control all those things, hurtful or hateful, whatever they might be, that people say about me or my family, or about my faith.”
Dan added: “I’m thankful that I’ve developed the skin of a rhino.”
The former Football Focus host is gearing up to make his Strictly Come Dancing 2021 debut and revealed he won’t take any criticism from the judges to the dancefloor.
As he prepared to take centre stage, Dan vowed to do his best and wow the strict panel of judges.
As a devout Christian, Dan claimed he was able to take the heat because of his faith: “I never mind what people write or say about me.
“That’s because, as a Christian, I don’t take my value from what people think of me,” he concluded.
Dan will be one of 15 contestants competing on Strictly Come Dancing for a chance to showcase their new dance moves and an opportunity to take home the glitterball trophy.
The competition is expected to premiere on BBC One next month.
