Filming is underway for the much-anticipated Downton Abbey movie, and it has added a roster of new stars to boot.
Harry Potter’s Imelda Staunton, Sherlock Holmes‘ Geraldine James and The Thick of It‘s David Haig are among those who have signed-up.
Also joining the cast are The Hitchhiker’s Guide to the Galaxy‘s Simon Jones, Sense8‘s Tuppence Middleton, Peaky Blinders‘ Kate Phillips, and Goodbye Christopher Robin‘s Stephen Campbell Moore.
They join returning cast members including Hugh Bonneville, Dame Maggie Smith and Michelle Dockery, though one star who won’t be back is Lily James.
“I’m sadly not, but I’m so excited for it – I’m going to be front row,” the Mamma Mia! Here We Go Again actress explained, adding that the reason “wasn’t schedules”.
“My character Rose moved off to New York, so it would be farfetched to bring her back. I would have loved to have come back for a scene, but for a movie it can’t be like a Christmas special and it needs to be a focused storyline. There was no space for Rose.”
Still, Robert Bathhurst (Sir Anthony Strallan) is up for making an appearance. He said: “I disappeared from ‘Downton Land’ in series three. Off he went. He left Edith at the altar never to be seen again. The rat should come back!”
The long-awaited movie was finally officially confirmed back in July, with series creator Julian Fellowes writing the screenplay.
A release date for the Downton Abbey movie is yet to be announced.
