EastEnders fans were treated to a rare sight indeed on Thursday’s edition of the BBC soap, when two long standing background characters were introduced to newcomer George Knight.
Market trader Winston was the first star to appear, as viewers at home saw him greet newcomer George Knight, before explaining who he was to fellow resident Whitney Dean.
Meanwhile later in the episode, barmaid Tracey, who many fans will recognise for her “silent” role in the show, was actually treated to a line in the soap as she met new pub owner George, while co-owners Elaine Peacock and Linda Carter could be heard arguing in the background.
The surprising appearances made a huge change for the stars, who typically aren’t given speaking roles in the soap, despite making regular appearances.
In the latest episode, newcomer George first ran into Tracey as she entered the pub to start her shift, shortly after his arrival at the Queen Vic.
Unsure of who he was or why he was there, George soon explained everything to the baffled barmaid before revealing he already knew her name!
Elsewhere in the square however, an awestruck Winston was busty explaining to Whitney who George was, as it turned out he was a famous boxer that was familiar to many Walford residents.
As Whitney asked who George was, a shocked Winston exclaimed: "You're kidding… that's George Knight!”
Viewers at home were delighted by the development, with many fans sharing their enthusiasm to see more of the long running characters on screen.
One viewer cheekily quipped: "Extra budget on tonight's @bbceastenders we have had Winston and Tracey both speak a line!”
Another tweeted: "Tracey had a line” alongside a celebratory gif!
Before a third fan added: "Tracey spoke two words! Omg!”
A fourth fan then wrote: "Tracey spoke I’m shocked."
The surprising appearance came as Walford welcomed the Knight family just one day on since the tragic death of Lola Pearce on Wednesday.
George ruffled more than a few feathers with his arrival, with Linda in particular being less than impressed with the idea of running the pub alongside him.
However, it appears George has a kind heart and won his fair share of fans after allowing Lola’s grieving relatives to drink for free in the pub, while also organising a collection to help support her family.
He also offered words of comfort to a grieving Lexi and Ben as they tried to come to terms with the loss of the much loved staple of the square.
