Emmerdale Laurel star’s life – romance, borrowed wedding shoes and co-star bond

Laurel Thomas will be left shocked and angry in Emmerdale, after she discovers that Jai has scammed her.

When Jai accidentally leaves loan papers in a folder, Laurel discovers the paperwork and cannot believe what she is reading.

ITV soap bosses have already hinted that the couple could split up following the discovery, with Emmerdale Producer Laura Shaw saying to press: "There's a difficult road ahead for Jai and Laurel.

"Jai's desperation to sort out his money woes steps up a gear and he'll go to extreme lengths to cover the money he owes for the HOP fine – so will his relationship with Laurel be jeopardised?"

Although Laurel's onscreen relationship is on the rocks, off-screen, actress Charlotte Bellamy has a beautiful romance with her childhood sweetheart and close bonds with her Emmerdale co-stars.

She has also revealed an Emmerdale set secret about her own wedding too.

Rival soap role

Long before Charlotte joined Emmerdale as Laurel Thomas, the star had a recurring role in another popular rival soap.

From 1996 to 1997, Charlotte played Sue Taylor in EastEnders for 11 episodes.

Her acting talents certainly caught the eye of casting directors, as Charlotte has not left our screens since, starring in TV series including The Bill, Wing And A Prayer, Dream Street and Construction Site.

She has also had leading roles in The Broker's Man as Harriet Potter and Tess Of The D'Urbervilles as Cissy.

Emmerdale icon

Charlotte recently shared a huge milestone in her life, as she celebrated 20 years of playing Laurel in Emmerdale.

The actress has played the role since 2002, and throughout the years, her character has taken viewers on quite the wild ride through her life.

Speaking at an Emmerdale press event, the actress explained that she couldn't believe she was still part of the soap, saying: "But it’s kind of like Emmerdale is part of my blood, really.

"My children were all born in Yorkshire, I live round the corner from the village.

"I feel so lucky to be part of a team that is just so genuine and brilliant and hard-working, and I never ever take that for granted. I feel very, very lucky."

Co-star bonds

Away from the dales, Charlotte also has a sweet co-star bond with her fellow Emmerdale actors, and was even a bridesmaid at one of the couple's weddings.

Charley Webb and Matthew Wolfenden married at Ripley Castle in Harrogate in 2018, alongside bridesmaids who included Charlotte and fellow co-stars Lucy Pargeter, Roxy Shahidi, Zoe Henry, Sammy Winward, Emma Atkins and producer Kate Oates.

Speaking about the special day, Charley told OK! Magazine: "That moment when we announced what we were doing and seeing everybody’s reaction is the best moment of my life.

"This way we got to do it totally the way we wanted – it wasn’t traditional, we didn’t have a sit-down meal and there weren’t loads of speeches.

"Someone once told me their friend had a surprise wedding and it stuck in my mind."

Childhood sweetheart

Away from the limelight, Charlotte is married to her husband Mungo Denison, who is a Company Director with offices in Leeds and London.

The childhood sweethearts have been a couple since they were 18 years old, and got married in a secret, low key wedding in 2012.

Speaking about their special day, the actress told Leeds Live: "We sat there at breakfast and said to the kids, 'We're getting married today', and they were like, 'What?'

"We did it on a random Thursday in May 2012. It was a beautiful sunny day, there was no fuss and no stress, it was great."

Charlotte and Mungo have three children together – two boys called Herbie and Sunnie, and a daughter called Teddie.

The actress took time off from the soap to go on maternity leave, but was amazed to become pregnant at the same time as her Emmerdale character in 2006, telling The Mirror: "You couldn't make it up."

Borrowed wedding shoes off set

Another huge secret about Charlotte's wedding day was her outfit, which included a set of shoes borrowed from the Emmerdale set.

The actress revealed that she did not have shoes that matched her dress, so took a pair of shoes wore by her character to wear on the big day instead.

However after making the confession, Charlotte admitted that she hoped she would not get into trouble for borrowing the shoes, saying: "I didn't have any navy shoes to go with the dress so I borrowed a pair of Laurel's from work.

"I've never told anyone that so I hope I don't get in to trouble!"

Emmerdale airs weekdays on ITV at 7pm
