Former Coronation Street star to make dramatic return to the cobbles

A Coronation Street favourite is returning to the cobbles – in a different role.

Maureen Lipman is set to return to Weatherfield 16 years after she left, this time as Tyrone Dobb’s grandma Evelyn Plummer.

Battleaxe Evelyn makes an appearance following the death of Ty’s mum Jackie – and much to Fizz Brown’s dismay.

Coronation Street producer Iain MacLeod said: "I am beyond thrilled that we are introducing such a great new character, played by someone of Maureen’s pedigree.

"Evelyn is eye-wateringly withering and will add a fresh dollop of northern humour to the show as she turns Tyrone and Fiz’s lives upside down."

The acclaimed British played a completely different character during her previous stint.

In 2002, she portrayed Lillian Spencer – a good friend of larger-than-life butcher Fred Elliot – who was brought into the Rovers as a relief manager.

Her tenure was shot-lived, with Lillian shipping out the moment she was offered a better job in the posh suburb of Marple.

Lillian was only introduced after Julie Goodyear, who played Bet Lynch, had to call off her own return, citing ill health.
