Lord of the Rings' Merry aka Dominic Monaghan posts touching tribute to Pippin star Billy Boyd

In case you weren’t aware, Billy Boyd (aka Pippin) in The Lord of the Rings trilogy is 50. YES, 50. We can’t believe it either.

The actor marked his birthday yesterday (August 28), and what better way to celebrate than to get a nice tribute from your best on-screen Hobbit mate?

Dominic Monaghan (aka Merry) posted a touching message to his close friend on Instagram, writing: “The toast to my @marmite the cat to my meow the cream in my coffee the Pip to my Merry.

The toast to my @marmite the cat to my meow the cream in my coffee the Pip to my Merry. The greatest gift from our adventure in New Zealand has been my friendship with you. (And the cash you have given me) happy birthday @boydbilly

The pair have remained good friends, frequently posting videos together up to mischief. So basically Merry and Pippin in real life.

I’m sure I’ve met this “Brian” before. @boydbilly #becurious

He wasn’t the only one to send good wishes to Billy, with Orlando Bloom (Legolas), writing: “Our eyes first met across a crowded airport 21 years ago as we embarked on our epic journey into #middleearth #lotr

“@dom_monaghan_ may think he’s your BFF but I know you know we know more as this photo shows I’ve called but you’re not picking up so I hope you see this happy BIG 50 you sexy beast you.”

Meanwhile, last week it was confirmed that Monaghan would be reuniting with Lost boss JJ Abrams with a part in Star Wars: Episode IX.

“The galaxy far, far away has had almost as much influence as the one I live in, so I am delighted to be involved,” he said.

He joins the likes of Daisy Ridley, John Boyega, Adam Driver, Oscar Isaac, Kelly Marie Tran, Anthony Daniels, Mark Hamill and Domhnall Gleeson, as well as newcomers Keri Russell, Naomi Ackie, Richard E Grant and Matt Smith in undisclosed roles.
