Riverdale is getting some fresh faces… sort of.
In the show’s upcoming season, one episode will involve a flashback of the town’s parents. Camila Mendes (who plays Veronica) will depict a young Hermione Lodge, and now it’s been revealed Michael Consuelos, Mark Consuelos’s 21-year-old son, will portray a young Hiram Lodge. What a great casting choice! KJ Apa is set to play a young Fred, Lili Reinhart will be Alice, and Cole Sprouse will be FP. The only parent missing from the weirdly tight-knit group was Hiram, and who better than the actor’s son to channel dad’s intense energy? Some fans think Michael looks just like his father, so it’ll be interesting to see how he interacts with other members of the cast during the blast from the past.
The episode, titled The Midnight Club, is a spin on the classic film, The Breakfast Club. It’ll give us a glimpse into the lives of the Riverdale parents as high schoolers and will reveal a dark, terrible secret that they’ve all — including Penelope Blossom — been hiding.
While Michael has the benefit of playing his own father, other cast members are doing major research to get in the swing of playing their “parents.” Reinhart, for example, has been studying Mädchen Amick’s iconic role as Shelly Briggs on Twin Peaks.
Interestingly, Young Hiram is Michael’s first acting gig as he’s currently a junior at NYU Tisch School of the Arts. With his father’s help, though, we’re sure this will be the standout performance of the episode.
Still no word on who will play the younger version of Hal Cooper or if Trevor Stines, who played Jason Blossom in Season 1, will return to portray Clifford Blossom or his twin brother, Claudius.
Evan Roe, who plays Jason on Madam Secretary, would make a perfect Hal. They look incredibly similar, and Roe certainly has the talent to embody the tormented character. After all, Hal’s childhood was tortuous. He was brainwashed into being the Black Hood.
We’d love to see Katherine McNamara as a young Mary Andrews. She’d step into Molly Ringwald’s shoes nicely. Meanwhile, Casey Cott would be a fantastic Sheriff Keller. He’s really found his pacing as Kevin (every Riverdale girl’s GBF) but so far he hasn’t been written as a real character, just the embodiment of every stereotype around gay men. Playing the younger version of his father could really showcase Cott’s acting abilities. Likewise, Ashleigh Murray, AKA Josie, would be excellent as her parent’s younger self. Her mom, Sierra, is clearly a force to be reckoned with and her history with the other parents still needs to be fleshed out.
