NCIS’ latest series finished last month, resulting in two dramatic exits, with Agent Gibbs (played by Mark Harmon) being “killed off” in a boat explosion. CBS has already confirmed the drama’s returned and it is predicted season 19 will begin later this year. The cast is going to look very different though in comparison to its latest series.

WARNING: This article contains spoilers from NCIS.

Ellie Bishop (Emily Wickersham) left NCIS as a “disgraced agent” after handing over confidential NSA files.

This was all part of an undercover operation though Bishop had been employed to take part in by Odette Malone (Elayne Taylor) but meant she had to leave her life behind for the foreseeable.

Agent Gibbs had already been suspended earlier on in the series but he continued to work unofficially by trying to catch a serial killer.

In the final few moments of the series finale, Gibbs’ boat exploded with him on board and it looked like he had been killed.

Thankfully, he discreetly swam off so it looks like the veteran agent will be faking his death to continue his investigation when NCIS returns.

During the last couple of episodes, Agent Jessica Knight (Katrina Law) joined the team.

She is a former REACT (Regional Enforcement Action Capabilities Training Team) agent who specialises in hostage negotiations who is “sharp, athletic and tough”.

Actress Law has since been made a series regular and will return for season 19 of the CBS drama.

Another actor has also been cast as a new member of the team which has caused some concern for fans.

The network has announced that actor Gary Cole will be starring as a series regular in season 19.

Cole is best known for starring in various shows, including Veep, The Good Fight, The West Wing and Midnight Caller.

When NCIS does return, Cole is going to be portraying a character called FBI Special Agent Alden Park but as he will be in the show full-time, it is presumed he is going to join NCIS at some stage.

So will Cole be taking over Harmon’s role as the team leader in the long-running crime drama?

NCIS leaders have typically been men with Harmon as Gibbs and Scott Bakula as Dwayne Pride in the newly cancelled NCIS New Orleans.

Therefore, Cole would fit the bill and could take over Gibbs’ role since he is not only suspended but pretending to be dead.

However, CBS has already confirmed that this will not be the case with Cole not acting as a replacement for Harmon.

The mystery remains then how he will be integrated into the show for season 19.

While team leaders have been men in the NCIS franchise up until now, this won’t be the case for the latest spin-off.

NCIS Hawaii will be led by Agent Jane Tennant, played by actress Vanessa Lachey.

As of yet, a release date hasn’t been announced but there is a chance it could begin sometime later this year or in early 2022.

NCIS is available to watch on CBS.
