Talking about the possibility of the three ‘Only Murders in the Building’ stars hosting the 2022 Academy Awards, Hulu Originals and ABC Entertainment president Craig Erwich admits, ‘They’d be a dream.’
AceShowbiz –Selena Gomez could be hosting the 2022 Academy Awards with Steve Martin and Martin Short. Having shown their chemistry on the comedy series “Only Murders in the Building“, the trio would likely have a chance to bring their talents to the Oscar stage.
According to Variety, individuals involved with the upcoming 94th Annual Academy Awards are entertaining the idea of having the pop star and the two veteran comedians as hosts for the show. “I mean, they are an iconic trio,” Hulu Originals and ABC Entertainment president Craig Erwich says to the site.
“Obviously we know that because [‘Only Murders’] is our most watched comedy ever,” he gushes about the mystery-comedy series which streams on Hulu. “They have mass appeal. Everybody loves them. They’d be a dream.”
Erwich, however, isn’t the only one who has a say in the decision making as it’s also up to the Academy, Oscars producer Will Packer and ABC, which will air this year’s ceremony. “That said, there’s a lot of incredible talent we’re considering. We’re having ongoing conversations with Will and the Academy about it,” Erwich notes.
Judd Apatow has similar idea with Erwich. The filmmaker recently tweeted of Martin and Short, “It would be pure joy and we need that,” when responding to Variety’s Tuesday story about the return of an Oscar emcee. Apatow didn’t include Gomez in his tweet, though.
Prior to this, it was reported that Pete Davidson was considered to host the Oscars, but that’s unlikely to happen. A source confirms to Variety that there was an informal conversation with the comedian’s team about the gig, but it’s not going further.
As to why the “Saturday Night Live” star won’t be selected as the host, it is explained that Davidson is too closely associated with NBC and not part of the talent stable within ABC, which broadcasts the Oscars. Thus, having the Staten Island native as the host would be free promotion for a competing network.
Besides Gomez, Martin and Short, the Academy may be considering Tom Holland as the host. The Hollywood Reporter recently said the British actor has been asked about the gig after he expressed interest in hosting the Oscars.
“And you know I would love to do that – I love that kind of thing, I love being put under pressure and doing things that I feel uncomfortable doing,” the “Spider-Man: No Way Home” star told the outlet in December when asked if he would be open to oversee the show. “So I’m interested in it, but I just don’t have the time.”
