A little bit of innocent flirting between Chas (Lucy Pargeter) and Kev the Drayman (Matthew Connell) in tonight’s Emmerdale was the occasion for another downward spiral for poor Paddy (Dominic Brunt), who is really struggling since he and his wife split.

What he overheard was really just a bit of innocent banter, as Chas and Kev go back a long way and she was also asking him about his pregnant girlfriend. There was no agenda at all, but that’s not how Paddy saw it as he stormed out.

Chas saw his reaction and followed him outside and told him it had just been banter. ‘It was humiliating,’ Paddy said. ‘If you have no respect for me at least have some for yourself.’

All of this was overheard by Caleb (William Ash), and after Paddy had gone he reminded his sister that she doesn’t have to let Paddy speak to her like that.

Later she asked Paddy to look after Eve (Bella James) because she had to go to a trade thing on the south coast the next day. She added that she might stay over if it ended late. Paddy reacted with suspicion and Chas reiterated that it was just a work thing. Possibly with Caleb’s words in her mind, Chas told Paddy that it was his choice to remain living at the Woolpack and it didn’t give him the right to tell her how to behave.

‘All I’m asking is you don’t flirt with every single man you come across right in front of my face,’ he said. She told him she had to be able to speak to people as and how she sees fit and he doesn’t get to control her. She said if he had any more thoughts about things she was doing wrong she should keep them to herself.

The last bit of this was overheard by Mandy (Lisa Riley). When she saw him later sitting in his car she went over. He told her he was trying to get a bit of peace and quiet. She invited him over to hers with an added incentive of custard creams, but he insisted he was fine.

Realising how much her old friend was hurting, Mandy reassured him that he would get over it eventually, but Paddy insisted he was fine and all he wanted was to be left alone.

Mandy reluctantly left him to it, but we know she’s not going to give up. In fact Lisa Riley has teased a reunion for the pair that she reckons we’re all rooting for.

‘The nation wants them to [get back together]!’ she told us. ‘All over social media, it’s what they want. What we did realise was when the pandemic hit everybody was watching Paddy and Mandy on the lunchtime and they just loved it. That generation weren’t even born. We have this whole generation of teenagers watching the nostalgia show and they loved that relationship that the writers set up all those many, many years ago.’

But is it actually going to happen? ‘Do we want to give the audience exactly what they want straight away? Everybody loved Ross and Rachel, didn’t they?’ Lisa teased.

In the short term, can Mandy manage to break through Paddy’s defences and help him to move on with his life?

Emmerdale continues Wednesday February 8 at 7:30pm on ITV1 and ITVX.
