Robbie Williams’ mentor role on X Factor revealed ahead of show launch

He was the Take That bad boy – the one who loved a feud, courted controversy, and had us all on edge over what he might do next.

But now the tables are turned on Robbie Williams – as he’s about to have not one, but three bands of his own to keep in check.

We can reveal cheeky chappy Robbie, 44, has been given the groups to mentor on this year’s X Factor , with Simon Cowell, 58, landing the girls and One Direction’s Louis Tomlinson, 26, looking after the boys.

You might have thought Louis, who broke America and sold 50 million albums worldwide just two years ago, might have been the better choice for groups than Robbie who first left Take That in 1995.

Yet clearly show bosses are Pray-ing the Angels singer might have the right eye to find the next Gary Barlow and co.

A show insider tells us: “Robbie is a clear choice for the groups – not only have Take That got a legacy of three decades in the making, he’s known how to entertain us since the 90s.”

Of course, the real question is what category is Robbie’s wife, Ayda Field Williams, going to mentor?

The feisty Loose Women star, 39, is fast becoming the star of the show in the live auditions, we’re told.

But eyebrows were initially raised when she landed the coveted spot, despite never having had either a hit song or managed a hit band.

Instead, her qualifications were touted as being Robbie’s “rock”.

How genius is it, then, that she has The Overs?
