Star Trek: Discovery has been a critical success that the TV franchise hasn’t seen for a while, and while fans are overjoyed to have such high-quality Trek in their lives again, there are still a few things bugging them.
One of the biggest bugbears about season one was the redesign of the Klingons, shaving them of their iconic hairstyles and giving them a more armoured, ancient warrior look.
Well, Discovery season two is going to give the iconic race another brand new look, as teased by make-up designer Glenn Hetrick at the Star Trek Las Vegas panel over the weekend.
He is quoted by Trek Movie as saying: “As we move into season two… it has been a while since we have seen our Klingon friends. So, everything keeps evolving.
“And I can guarantee you this, you are going to be blown away that they have a completely new look, yet again, going into season two… you are going to see much different designs. You are going to see different houses you haven’t seen before.”
He went on to explain: “One of the most important things to us was that at this point in canon, as we head towards the current version of unification, the houses really each grow up on different planets. It is an Empire, it is not just [the house of] Qo’noS… We have seen six of the great houses in close-up in season one.
“As we move forward into the next season, I promise that we will continue exploring and unpacking and unfolding that infinitely interesting story of what the Klingon culture looks like on a wider level.”
Hopefully that wider part of Klingon culture involves the famous hair, which is something that Hetrick and co thought about when designing their more ‘ritual’-based Klingons.
Star Trek: Discovery airs on CBS in the US and on Netflix in the UK. Season two begins in January 2019.
