The Crown could be set for huge return U-turn despite final season

The Crown: Royal expert criticises ‘subtle manipulations’

The sixth and final season of Netflix’s The Crown will return to screens this autumn but it looks as though it will be continuing in a different form, with the streaming platform reportedly hoping to follow it up with a series of films.

It’s not the first time that a show such as The Crown ended only for it to continue in a different medium. Downton Abbey famously made the transition from TV to film, with two hit movies being released in 2019 and 2022, respectively.

After 60 episodes chronicling the lives of the British Royal Family, a TV insider has revealed that “creating a movie, or perhaps a series of specials, means creators would have so much more flexibility to jump in terms of time and topics”.

They added: “They could deliver a prequel, perhaps focusing on the abdication crisis in the 1930s.

“Down the line, there’s the option to revisit the 21st-century royals, perhaps focusing on Harry meeting Meghan and his fallout with William.”

While this move into film hasn’t yet been confirmed by Netflix, it follows claims that a seventh season of the show could potentially still be on the cards.

At a wrap party to mark the end of the sixth season, one executive hinted to the Mail On Sunday that there may be more to come.

He remarked: “Just you wait until next year – maybe we will be in production.” Whether this is for a seventh season or a film, fans of the show will have to wait and see.

Viewers can expect to see events that took place between 1997 and 2005 when the show returns later this year.

This will cover incidents such as the tragic death of Princess Diana (played by Elizabeth Debicki), Prince William (Ed McVey) and Kate Middleton’s (Meg Bellamy) early relationship as well as the wedding of Charles (Dominic West) and Camilla (Olivia Williams).

Even though the show has been a hit with viewers, it has become more controversial as the timeline moved towards more contemporary events, with only a loose connection to what happened in real life, on some occasions.

So, could a seventh series potentially focus on King Charles’ reign? Or even go back further in time via a prequel that takes fans back to the Queen’s childhood and teenage years?

The Crown seasons 1-5 are available to stream on Netflix, with season 6 airing in autumn 2023.
