June Osborne (played by Elisabeth Moss) and Janine Lindo (Madeline Brewer) finally found freedom in Chicago in the latest instalment of The Handmaid’s Tale. Unfortunately, their escape was tragically cut short by a brutal attack from Gilead, but some fans of the bleak Hulu series couldn’t help but laugh at the divisive final moments of this week’s episode.
Fans of The Handmaid’s Tale have criticised the series’ bizarre song decision at the end of the dystopian drama’s latest episode, ‘Chicago’.
The episode was released on Hulu on Wednesday, and accompanied an emotional reunion between June and Moira (Samira Wiley) with a weepy rendition of Coldplay’s ‘Fix You’.
After meeting up with a new resistance group last week, escaped Handmaids June and Janine decided to make it on their own and safely made it into Chicago.
Following a tearful farewell, Janine decided she was better off tagging along with June and the pair reunited in a seemingly deserted street.
Unfortunately, Nick Blaine (Max Minghella) and Commander Lawrence (Bradley Whitford) were unsuccessful in their bid for a ceasefire to secretly aid June in her mission.
June and Gilead were once again at Gilead’s mercy as the council ordered a devastating airstrike in Chicago.
Thankfully, June made it out relatively unscathed, although Janine’s fate remains unclear heading into episode six.
The climax of the episode ruffled a number of feathers in The Handmaid’s Tale fanbase, as many found the use of Coldplay’s hit single undercut June and Moira’s stunned encounter.
Several fans voiced their bemused reactions on Reddit once the new episode was released to streamers on Hulu.
One user posted: “I mean… who thought it was a good idea??? Killed the whole scene for me.”
And a fan of the band even conceded: “Mixed also. I rolled my eyes hard, and I have been to 15 Coldplay concerts. That song is so overused.”
A third viewer remarked: “The fact that they played that song directly after a slow motion bombing made me feel like I was watching a Michael Bay Movie.”

“Which is not what I want when I’m watching The Handmaid’s Tale!”
Although this version of the song was provided by singer Rachael Schroeder for Fearless Soul, the drama’s soundtrack choice eerily coincided with Coldplay’s comeback at this year’s Brit Awards.
A number of fans were thankful the female-fronted, feminist series at least opted for a different take on Coldplay’s classic tearjerker.
While others still argued the song choice was more than appropriate, considering the emotional payoff of June and Moira finally meeting up again after all these years.
Another fan hit back: “I f*g hate Coldplay but I loved that scene. I was worried it was going to be Nick but I’m glad it was Moira.”
And one more added: “I thought it was a weird choice but when I saw Moira I started bawling my eyes out then felt the song was fitting.”
Their mixed opinions on Coldplay aside, fans are still hooked on the plight of June Osborne, with much of the audience dubbing this week’s episode the best of the season so far.
The Handmaid’s Tale season 4 continues Wednesday, May 19 on Hulu.
