Eating this common breakfast food could cause you to fail a drugs test

We all lead incredibly busy lives.

And with so much to do in a day, it’s no surprise we don’t often stop to think about the small consequences of eating certain foods – what’s actually in them and what they can do to our bodies.

But perhaps we should spend more time doing just that.

A woman found out the hard way exactly why this should be the case, after her choice of breakfast food one morning had very disturbing consequences.

It sounds a little bit insane, but it turns out that eating a poppy seed bagel can cause you to fail a drugs test.

Medical experts say this isn’t common, but can certainly happen.

According to the Tampa Bay Times , this is because the seeds are derived from opium poppies, so they can sometimes contain traces of morphine.

These traces aren’t enough to make you high, but can be enough to appear on a sensitive drug test.

This is exactly what happened to a mother from Maryland back in April – the exact same day she gave birth to her child.

Elizabeth Eden ate a poppy seed bagel for breakfast on the morning she went into labour.

As she was experiencing contractions in hospital, a doctor came in and informed her she’d tested positive for opiates.

Elizabeth told the doctor about the bagel, and asked to take the test again but he refused and reported her to state officials.

She told Baltimore-based news station WBAL-TV : "It was traumatizing."

The positive test result meant that her newborn daughter had to stay in hospital alone and be monitored for several days.

And afterwards Elizabeth was assigned a case worker.

However they quickly determined that the bagel had in fact caused Elizabeth’s result to show a false-positive, and that she wasn’t taking drugs.

Several other similar cases have been reported over the years.

As well as poppy seed bagels, there are a range of other bizarre ways in which you can test positive for drugs, without having actually taken them.

These include second hand marijuana smoke, taking cold and flu medicines which sometimes contain ingredients that could cause a false-positive for amphetamines and drinking tonic water, which contains a small amount of quinine – the drug used to treat Malaria.
