There is possibly nothing Brits love more than a lovely pot of tea.

And while the UK is often known for its stiff upper lip, the etiquette of making a good ‘cuppa’ is something that can easily offend if not properly followed.

This is why one local farmers market has left Twitter users fuming after innocently sharing a GIF that showed milk added to a teapot.

Leeds-based Headingley Market inadvertently kicked off a national debate when tweeting the animation to celebrate national Yorkshire Day.

One social media user replied: ‘No, I won’t visit as you appear to have put milk in your teapot. I am sure people got put in the tower for less’

The Yorkshire Tea official Twitter account even weighed into the debate, writing: ‘It’s mildly alarming, but we don’t have it in our hearts to be mean to a local market’

Within minutes of the controversial GIF being posted from their Twitter account, social media users jokingly told the farmer’s market that it ‘should be ashamed’ by the milky ‘abomination’.

One said: ‘Happy #YorkshireDay to you too. If you want to pop down to Nottingham for #NottinghamshireDay you’ll be welcomed and shown how to make tea properly.’

Captioned with: ‘Happy #YorkshireDay peeps! Did you know all of our stalls are local to Leeds? Come and visit us on 11th August’, one social media user replied: ‘No, I won’t visit as you appear to have put milk in your teapot. I am sure people got put in the tower for less.’

Headingley Market apologised for the tea-making faux pas saying they picked the problematic GIF as they ‘liked the teapot’.

The market wrote: ‘Waking up to 99+ notifications over a #tea GIF. The good ol’ #Yorkshire folk shining through with some top quality responses, as always! Our mornings sorted, cheers #teagate’
